It's been about a year and I finally got my welding equipment. I was debated between the Eastwood 135 mig and Lincoln 135 I think it was. I went with the Eastwood because of the more positive comparison towards the Eastwood. Then grab a 40cubic inch bottle with the c25 argon co2 mix. In theast year I have also bought a jdm 94 rx7 from a friend who was moving and also a technovoilet 97 e36 m3 from another friend who upgraded to a newer model bmw. So this car was on the back burner for a year. Whoever I was able to take the two layers of orange paint off her with one jug of air craft paint remover. Took a couple of weekend to remove the fenders, interior, moldings, trim etc. AFter those long nasty, dirty hard labor weekends of break down I didn't really find any more rust surprises. With the bare metal car expose I used the etching primer to protect it. So that's were I am with this project so far here are a couple pics. I just picked up welding the quarter panel piece that my co worker helped me start (RIP Ryan) and will continue to update and I gather more replacement panels, time and money!

I have a 71 240z and looking to do the l28et swap in it I will pay for shipping it to me. I and located in silver spring, md. I prefer the motor to be in working condition. Thanks

I am in the same boat as you. Similar rust spots. I'm going to tackle mine pretty soon in the spring. I went ahead and did the rear quarter panel since that was the worst and the car came with the replacement panel. It was pretty easy and I never welded anything in my life before. Good luck!

I know this is a couple months late but I just read this whole thread and I must say I am really excited about started my rb20det in my 71 240z! This really motivated me to get started. Now to find some space lol.
-
Yeah I bought it from a guy in south jersey, I feel bad I havent been working on it lately, just been driving it once a week to keep components rolling. Cant wait till spring to get working again!
-
Cool I should make a video, yeah the rumbling sound when in neutral then goes away when pushing clutch pedal, the car is park at my job in the auto park in briggs chaney if you have time to stop by and check it out.
-
OK just a quick update so I finally received the spring for the clutch slave cylinder and pop it on and drove the car for about 15 mins and it did fine but my Co worker (bmw tech)stopped me and heard the car in neutral and told me I will need a throw out bearing soon. Anyway of telling which 5 speed I have? I guess looking at the transmission to find some number maybe? Sorry for the newbness again lol.
-
Anybody out here? I guess ill be waiting for the loy guy, I ordered a return spring in the meantime.
-
yeah but I looked under and saw some holes for the spring, ill check again and see what kind if 5 speed I have.
-
Ouch! Hope that isn't the case with me.
-
Thats right! Hopefully this will fix the problem, I'll find a spring laying around here in this BMW parts dept I work I'm sure we have some around here some were.
-
Yeah lol I took the wrong picture. Does the clutch fork return springs go bad often? Guess that is located in the transmission? Sorry about all my noobness. It did go into gear when parked and turned off, but when turned on it would sometimes go into gear and sometimes not and act like it wanted to cut off. I might just give up and push it across the street to the Nissan dealer lol.

^ good point I will check that out, I hope that is the culprit. thanks

Well today I took my wife out again for more testing. I had her press the clutch pedal down while I was under the car looking around. The slave clutch was moving while she pressed the pedal down. Everything was working as normal the car actually moved! While the motor was turned on in neutral, I did hear some grinding noise but when I pressed the clutch pedal the noise would go away, I should make a video( the wife said the car sounded like that when we got it but I'm not sure loll I would of noticed). So all I gathered so far is my car works sometimes when it hasn't been driven in a couple days but will not engage in gear after a short trip. I hope its not the transmission. I'm pretty stuck right now I haven't had much transmission problems in the past, can anybody shed some light? I will make a video in the next day or so thanks~!

So I had a few minutes to go check out the car and there was fluid in the reservoir. It was really dirty similar to this I had my wife get in the car and push on the clutch and try to get it into gear but still would just stall out, even if you push down on the clutch alone it will try to stall. I notice the slave clutch wouldn't move or do anything this is what it looks like. Does this look normal anyone?
-
Thanks guys. Its pretty rewarding to learn something new, I just started the wheel arch because the piece came with the car.
-
Sounds like a plan to me ^
-
I downshifted to 2nd gear to pull into the parking lot and after I let off the clutch the car stalled and cut off. It was pretty crazy, I guess the first thing I can check is the fluid and the get underneath her and see what the clutch and the lines are looking like, sucks its in a dark gravel yard lol.

Hey guys, I been searching around but didn't find anything. I was driving around and the car stalled, and shut off. I started it up and it would not go into gear, it would just choke and stall out, I played with it for 15 minutes and just pushed it into a parking spot. I haven't been able to look at it just yet but I had a similar problem with this on my 240sx, it was the slave cylinder. You guys have any ideas? Thanks in advance! edit:car is a 240z with a 5 speed manual, drove the car fine up until now.

Just a little update, my co worker and I finally had a few hours so we attacked the passenger side rear well area. Before Out with the old cancer. In with the fresh metal. Took about 2 hours but its a start. I'm going to order some body parts for the tail trim and some floorboards and find a fix for the Tc box thingy s, but when I was going to park the car it stopped, stalled out and wouldn't go back into gear. Time to check the slave cylinder.

The area above the TC bucket on your right side looks a lot like how mine was back when I was driving my car (except mine wasn't bent back like that). Back then the Z was my only car and one day when I hit the brakes that whole section of the car separated from the rest of the unibody. I had to do a quick fix just so I could keep driving it and back then all I had was a flux welder. My car looked better because of all the dura-glass and bondo the previous owner used but after looking around I found the rockers were completely gone and the floors were just 22g sheet metal screwed down. My front subframe was busted were the sway bar mounts with smaller rust holes above the crossmember. Surprisingly there's only tiny rust holes above my rear wheel arches and a couple in the doors. Roll pan has been hammered in an accident (with 2.5" of dura-glass filling it up). A lot of people didn't think it could be saved but it's on it's way. My outer rockers are cut out completely allowing me to weld a 2X4 0.120" tubing to whats left of the inner rocker and adjoining areas. Then I have 2X2 0.083" as my subframe connector from directly off the TC bucket to the rear crossmember with 1.5" round tubing connecting it to the 2X4 in my rocker with 16g sheet metal used as a floor. I have the passenger side done and still working on the driver's side, but when it's done the engine is coming out and the front sub-frame is going to be replaced by 2X3 0.083". It should go without saying that I gave my flux core welder away to a friend and bought myself a nice MIG. When you start working on it, just remember to not rush yourself. That's the biggest mistake I see people do, the more time you take the better your results will be. Wow that sounds like alot of fun but there is alot of awesome information I'm going to use to tackle this thank you!
-
I love the advice, I have plenty of time to start absolutely no rush and each spot will get an equal amount of attention as needed, I love how people take these old cars and save them from being another junkyard scrap metal. Do the areas behind the front wheels look like I need a new sheet metal or can they be patched up?
-
Thanks guys will do! I wish I had some friends around here that can help out! Ill post pics when I start soon.
-
Thanks guys will do! When I grind the rotten paint/rust down that will really tell how far I will go with this car.
-
Yeah rusty dusty is right. I'm actually pretty excited about learning how to weld and do the body work because it drives really nice. I have 3 other cars so there is definitely no rush. Ill post pictures up once progress is made.
