  1. I guess I did leave out the part where I was looking for a physical comparison, not what sort of power they make. Sorry for the poor wording. I did search a bit before asking, but didn't find anything concrete. Basically, I was wondering if swapping an LS2 intake onto a truck engine is the same as swapping for an LS1 intake. I see them for similar prices on Ebay sometimes, and if the LS2 is the same (dimensions, bolt pattern, etc), I'll use it.
  2. I can't seem to find anything on how the LS2 manifold compares to the LS1. Does anyone know anything?
  3. Well, after hours upon hours of reading, I think I have decided on a turbo sbc 350. I know that I want fuel injection, but that's it. Does anyone have any personal experience with forced induction on the TPI, LT1, and Vortec injection and intake styles?
  4. I'm pulling my V6 this weekend so I can start a V8 swap. I've looked into the VH45DE, Olds 350 (always loved Oldsmobiles), and Chevy 350, and keep coming back to the SBC for the common reasons (cheaper, write-ups available, etc.). I've thought about a turbocharged 350, but I doubt I can afford that right now. The power level that I'm after isn't clear at the moment. All I know is that I want my Z to be faster than my friend's Merkur XR4Ti. He bought it for 500 bucks pre-modded (lots of electrical gremlins), so we don't know what its laying down. All I can tell you is that it can keep up with '06 GT Mustangs. In a light to light race, he can stay side by side with one, and win if he launches right (5 speed manual). Both cars weigh about 3000 lbs. What I'm thinking about now is buying a '76 4 bolt block from my neighbor and building it for boost, but leaving out the turbos until I can afford them (probably next winter), because I want room to grow powerwise. I don't want to build an engine and be stuck with a set power level. My friend can always turn up the boost if my car is faster. I want to be able to do the same. I realize that I may be looking for too much power, though. I've seen a few members on here with boosted small blocks. I read through some threads, but didn't learn much as far as parts combos are concerned. What sort of cranks, cams, rods, etc. do you guys reccomend? Any input will be greatly appriciated. If it matters, I want a manual transmission.
  5. I found someone with measurements of the engine bay and it looks like my 455 won't fit. I'm still going to test fit it with a junk 4 speed saginaw on it to see how everything looks. I may go with a 403/350 if they fit. You wouldn't happen to know how a saginaw compares in size with a M21 or even a T5, would you?
  6. Well, it looks like the 455 won't fit. I'm very interested in this 4.8L. Its still for sale for 500 bucks with alternator, power steering pump, and a/c compressor. It also has a 30 day warranty. Does anyone have any input as far as manual transmission choices? Will a 5.3/6.0 harness work with the 4.8? How about the ECM? I've done some searching, but everything I find is about the 5.3 or 6.0l engines.
  7. I'm looking into my V8 options for my 88 Z31. I'd like to stuff my 455 BBO engine in it, but it needs rebuilt and I'm pretty much stuck with a 4 speed unless I spring for an aftermarket tranny. There is a 4.8L Vortec engine with 70k for sale for 500 bucks near me. I'm interested in using it since its cheap and makes plenty of power (and chevy engines have many more manual transmission options). My knowledge of chevy engines ends with the LT1. Is the 4.8 similar in size and mounting position to an older SBC? I've seen older SBC's in Z31s and they fit quite well. What kind of manual transmission options do I get with a 4.8? Does anyone have any idea if one would fit in a Z31?
  8. Does your SBC's weight cause any problems for you? I think the 350 Olds is about the same weight, but the 455 weighs around 100 lbs more. I'd assume I'll need some kind of spring upgrade, but I'm worried about the car being too nose heavy. The V6 is coming out this weekend (hopefully). If all goes well, I'll be throwing the heads and oil pan back on the 455 to see if it fits.
  9. I am interested in replacing the all but blown N//A engine in my 88 Z31 with a V8. I've read most of the stuff on Chevy small blocks that Alf and a few others have posted, but I'm interested in using either the Oldsmobile 455 in my garage, or an Olds 350. It looks like the difference between the SBC and SBO is 2 more inches of length and 4 of width. I'm not sure of how the mounting points of the two compare. I'm afraid that the starter being where the chevy oil filter is will cause problems with the steering rack as well. Does anyone have any information that may help me? I'll be pulling my engine this weekend, but my 455 is in pieces and needs completely rebuilt. My plan is to use a 350, and eventually upgrade to the 455 if possible. I want to use a manual transmission. I've head that the rear axles are the weak link in my driveline. Does any one know what kind of power they can take? If all else fails, I can just use a chevy engine, but I'd like my swap to be a little more personal. I've always been an Oldsmobile fan.
  10. There is a 280zx down the street from me. It has the digital dash. I want to swap in an Oldsmobile 455, but I don't know if the digital gauges can be made to work. Anyone have any ideas?
  11. From running a few searches I found some posts indicating that the engine bay on the 280zx is a bit more cramped than the older Zs. By "cut up the car" to install a SBC engine, I meant the obvious alterations (what is included in the JTR manual). If I have to cut into the fender wells or make some drastic alterations to the car, I'll just wait until another time to build a v8 z and stuff my 455 into something else.
  12. I think the BBO has 4x4x4 inches (LxWxH) on the SBC. Am I correct in thinking that there is more room in an older Z?
  13. I know oldsmobile isn't chevy, but I think I'll get more of a response here. I have a '76 455 sitting in my garage, and there is a 280zx in the paper with no motor or tranny for 700 bucks. I've heard that the 280zx is a bit smaller than the older Z's. Does anyone have an idea as to whether or not my engine would fit without cutting up the car too much (as in, no more than a chevy swap)? I planned on using a 4 speed manual, like an M22.
  14. I've found an 86 300zx that I'm interested in, but it only says that it has t-tops and a digital dash. It looks like a 2+2, and it does have a manual tranny. It doesn't say whether or not its turbo, just a GLL trim level. I see no hood scoop, and there are no pictures of the engine bay. Did they come either way?
  15. Mine is the 7th edition. I got it a few days ago.
  16. I'm looking into building a V8 Z in the next few months, and I want to go with a GM small block. From what I've read, a 350 or 400 SBC seems like the best way to go for me, but I was wondering how similar a chevy 350 is to an olds 350. I've always had a thing for Oldsmobiles and Nissans, and I think it would be neat to combine them in a Z, but I can't seem to find much on the subject. Does anyone know if the JTR motor mounts work with the olds?
