  1. I first saw a 240Z in 1970 when a neighbor purchased one. I was 6 yr. old. I thought WoW that is cool. All the neighbors were gathered around checking it out.

    Fast forward to 19 yr. old and my mom had a friend that had a 240Z that had been garaged at home and work through the 1970. Then the car was only driven to church on Sundays when the weather was good. In 1987 I was contacted and asked if I wanted the car, it only had 73000 miles on it with an Auto trans and air conditioning. I drove the heck out of that car on the mountain roads for years. I had Koni struts, Tokico touring springs and Enkie 92 15x7 -0 off set. At one point I had a 240 block with tripple webers and a 5 speed. The car was orange with gold centered wheels. I do not have any digital pictures of the car in its original form or first modified form, but here is the rest of the story in pictures. Starting with the day I got it back from the bead blaster.

    Thank for the complements, I guess I will need to do my own post with start to finish photos that show some of the detail work that is not visable from the larger pictures.

    The Bumpers came from Motorsport Auto in Orange Ca. Not the best quality but they did fit and they were needed to finish off the car.

    Hay! Love the 350Z in action, especally the smoke from the rear tires. You know what they say "smokem if you can". Your car looks great and awsome photo.

  3. i dont see too many z's with fender mirrors besides the shows also. i rarely see anyone around with fender mirrors on the street, how can it look the same as everyone else when everyone else doesnt wanna pay for fender mirrors? lol. that is new though, having the fender mirrors mounted in the regular...im looking for some fender mirrors at the moment! i can really put those to use...eheheh.

     

    I got mine from a guy that is frequently on ebay with 240z parts that are hard to find in America. He is in Thailand and goes by Gira777 Shipping can be expensive so remember to calulate that into your bid. Shipping took about two weeks. Black is proper on a Fairlady, Chrome of the same style came on other cars. The black ones are harder to get a hold of.

  4. Looks good. How do you attach the lid to the spare tire well or is it attached to a bottom? Most enclosures I've seen are glassed into the spare tire well. It looks like you used a single piece of MDF or equivalent which is the route I was investigating.

    You are right. MDF a bead of silocone and stainless steel sheetmetal screws. The lid does not have to attempt to hold the kind of presures a sealed box does. It needs to be solid of course but due to the ports there is much less presure trying to blow the top off.

  5. Off-topic, but nice subwoofer setup. I am going to do the same here shortly, though with a single, sealed 8 or 10-in.

    Well as this page has gone off topic I will give more on the subs. I was going to use a sealed box at first. Then a friend from Custom Works called Polk Auido and told them were the box would go and what we were working with. The folks at Polk said you already have a sub enclosier (the spair tire well). If you try to seal it, it wont work. So porting the box was the best option. Polk informed us of exactly how long to make the tubes and what diameter. The ported encloiser also produces more volume per watt whish makes the system more efficent, so I have read. There does need to be damping materal placed on the walls of the spair tire well, see pictures, a Dynamat product and it is expensive. But it does sound great and it is easer to build than a sealed box in that spot for the Z.

  6. 310z, Is that stock ride height or do you have lowering springs?

    I purchased the springs 23 years ago. The car has been on jackstands most of the past 23 years until I finished a bare metal restoration that I finished 4-23-09 just in time to get to the MSA show. The springs are Tokico touring springs, (that stated like most preformance springs) they will lower the car 1 to 1.5 in. As I recall the car was a full 1.5 in. lower after first installing the springs. Then I realized that camber kits were a nessary part of the lowering process.

  7. Not that it is any fun working with tools in the cold but being in Colorado in about one month you could open your garage door in the morning for a few hours. Then you will not need the dry ice only the hammer. I used the cold enviroment to my advantage on this process it definetly helps. Another option that is not very enviromentally frendly and is extreemly messy and smelly is soaking rags in diesel fuel and then let sit on the tough spots. Diesel will eat asphalt under coatings.

     

    After all that hard work mine went to the bead blaster.

  8. These are BBS 16x8 - 0 offset with Bridgestone 225-50-16. The lips are rolled in front and I ground the rear lips to the spot welds. The stock front valence was not usable, as when the tires were turned they would be 0.030 in. from touching the valence. The valence shown on the car works fine. The front wheels have a 3/8 in. spacer used for caliper clearence not tire clearence. 225-45-16 would fit my car fine with either valence. I have struts, not coil overs. Everything is close but nothing rubs under any condition. Be careful with tire brands they are not all what they say they are. The TireRack.com has great information online about each tire under tire specs. You can see the measurement and variations amoung like size tires.

  9. Well, as I recall those wheels in a 15x7 - 0 offset sold in the late 1980s for $168. each. That is why I bought a set of Enkie 92 at only $118. each. I could not afford the better looking BBS. I always thought those were the best looking wheels for the price and they look great on a Z.

    There is nothing wrong with the old school look but you may have trouble finding a decient road tire in 14 or 15 in. I ran 195-60-15 for years on a 7 in. wheel and you might be able to run a 205-60-15 which will fill up the wheel well if your car is slightly lowered.

    I would not spend much over $300 for the set as they need to be polished. That will run you at least $75 a wheel. I cant rember if they are three piece wheels or not but if they are the wheel seals most likely will not hold air. Wheel seals for BBS wheels cost $50 each and bolts are a $1 each and there are 20 per wheel, they MUST be replaced. You may be able to get by with out replacing the nuts. I spent $500 in polishing and part to rebuild my BBS wheels.

  10. I hate to ask a stupid question, but from the picture of the left side rotor it appears that the vains on the rotor are pointing backwards. The other installs of this break kit I have seen have the vains pointing in the direction of rotation. Could the rotors possible be installed on the oposite sides or am I not seeing the picture correct?

    Summit Racing has all types of spacers available and a great return policy.

    I purchased it about two years ago when it first came out through Motor Sport Auto in Orange CA. I could not decide which front end to use. I purchased two. I wanted to use a carbon fiber BRE spoiler and that is the first front end I had on the car while building the car. I had 15x7 wheels and 225-50-15 and with rolled lips every where, everything fit fine. Then I found the BBS 16x8, 0 off set wheels and while the front wheels were turned the 225-50-16 had 0.030 in. clearance so the original lower facia had to come off. I had both front ends painted so I swapped to the one you see on the car.

    In California we are required to have a front license plate and I know some day I will be forced to put the old orginal plate on. Yes, I still have the orginal blue and gold Cal plates, the front is just not in good shape. This air dam looked good and gave me a place to put a front license plate without having to make something awkward to mount a front plate and it fit with the larger wheels.

    The paint code is K23. This is another picture in different light. The sun was just comming up in the mountains and there was mist from the meadow in the back ground. It tends to look best in bright sun. It is a hard color to layout and painters cringe when you tell them what color you want.

    First time I see or notice fender mirrors mounted to the door. Looks pretty good.

    Thanks for the complament and noticing the Fairlady fender mirrors on the doors. The idea for the JDM Fairlady fender mirrors, mounted on the doors came from Steve Pettersen @ Pettersen Motorworks, he only works on 240z, they are his specality and passion. I can't take credit for it. This mounting of the Fairlady fender mirrors on the doors is possibly a first. All of the pictures on line and shows that Steve and I have seen over the last twenty something years, we have never seen this done.

  14. Your car looks wonderful. Very nice. I just don't get the headlight covers that have the "obvious add-on" chrome strip around them, to be honest. They make sense, because they better the coefficient of drag, but I can't help realizing that they are total add-ons when they have that big metal strip. Just my opinion. Absolutely fantastic Z.

    Well sounds like you need to do a little more of your Z homework. How many sets of new out of the box factory original head lamp covers have you run onto lately? Those are factory originals that had not been out of the box until fitted on this car. New factory head lamp covers are unobtainium. That is why they are on this car. The same goes for the 16x8, 25-30 year old BBS magneisum race wheels that were never imported to the USA according to BBS America. They are rare, that is why they are there. Rareness/exclusive show that lots of homework went into this car.

    I have followed your build and you have done an amazing job. I thought that your 240Z may be finished before I finished mine. It always takes longer than expected. Keep up the quallity work.

    I will have to look back through some paper work to find the paint code. I cant rember it off the top of my head. However it was a 2007 limited edition color on a 350 Z called liquid platnum.

  16. This is my 1972 240Z that I bought as the second owner in 1986. I started the rebuild about two years ago, starting with media blasting, molded headlight buckets to fenders, shaving the marker lights, nastalgic BBS magneisum race wheels, and 1900 watts of Polk MOMO sound system. The car was finished friday night prior to hauling it to the MSA show 2009. I will post some more pictures of the interior.
