  1. Check your shift forks for cracks or excessive wear.  They're expensive.  If the shafts were out of alignment due to missing bearings, other problems can occur.  That's probably what caused the cracked gear.  The other gears must have had serious stress put on them too.

     

    You'll probably find enough other parts that need replacing that you'll wish you hadn't tried to rebuild, if you go that way.

     

    I'm no expert but it seems like a tranmsission with just worn bearings and synchros would be a better starting point for a rebuild.

    nope, I'm afraid I don't have knowledge to pass on.  i just send mine out for rebuild.  I wouldn't mind trying one someday...

     

    a place in atlanta called southern gear has a bearing/seal/etc rebuild kit.  i'm still waiting for my rebuilt one to get back before I pull my mostly working one out.

     

    When i replaced the first one with a mostly working one, we drained the really bad one, and parts of bearing carrier came out on the drain magnet.  OUCH!  I have a picture somewhere...

  2. With ANY centerlock setup, you should have a safety keeper.  This can be a spring pin, a pair of little tines that pop out, a safety clevis, whatever keeps the nut on the hub even if it loosens up.

     

    I was a data guy and a mechanic on a professional lemans prototype race team, I have 'knock ons' on my austin healey (early center locks, oddly without keepers).  The cobra replica guys who run center nuts on their halibrands safety wire them in place for street use.

    ~ Steved033 - It's good to see a new Z owner that seems to know a thing or two about the car hobby. Welcome aboard, but be careful, these cars are JUST like rabbits. If you get it too close to another you'll have 10 before you know it. 

     

    My backyard neighbor has 3 280's.  it took 2 years to meet him, now we hang out regularly... I know Tim is on here, but dont' know his handle right off hand...

  4. You got some awesome cars!  Those Austin Healeys....  Wow, I'm an instant admirer.  I've never even heard of the car before, but they look gorgeous!

    i've got a whole new respect for guys who could hustle these cars as race cars....it's so fun, but they're made of foil compared to today's cars...

  5. Looks good, I'm amazed no one has asked if there are any rust issues.

    The battery box is super solid, but the RH front frame rail needs some attention.  other than that, there's a couple little places, but nothing serious.

     

    I've done a couple of major reconstructions, this is nothing to worry about and one of the better Z's I've seen in a series 1.

Awesome ride!  Looks great!  I second the LS1 swap, but it is a V8, so that might not be what you are looking for.  As far as the being a BMW guy goes, I am also a BMW fan.  I have an E21 320i from 1982.  Pretty darn clean except for the carpets.  I just rebuilt the top end on it and fixed all the electrical problems (hazard switch, blinkers, headlights, cigarette lighter, defrost, etc etc).  It's been tons of work, but it is tons of fun!

  7. Hey everyone, 

     

    I'm new here, and just thought I'd introduce myself.

     

    I just traded a 1994 Jeep Cherokee 4x2 for my z.  it was in a suburb of Atlanta, and just sat in the guy's garage for about 8 years.  It's a 12/70 build date '71 240, the paint was rough, and it had no front valance.  It was originally silver, and a california automatic.  Somewhere in it's 41 year history someone converted it to a 280 5 speed, put on the Enkeis and 245 sized BFGs.

     

    It got a good buffing, a new fiberglass valance, new bearings, seals, calipers, rotors, master cylinder, and is waiting on the installation of a new gearbox, as the one in it is pretty shagged.
