  1. The distributor is timed and set. Now the car is doing the same thing that it was doing when I started. I ajusted the TPS setting completely oppisite of what it was and now the RPMs are jumping in between 1000 and 3000. So when I start it, it climbs to 3000 and then drops somewhat quickly down to 1000 and then back up. Is this sounding like the TPS is bad or does it sound like its trying to help my unknown problem??

  2. Ok, I figured it all out. I went to the junkyard got a "looked" like it was brand new distributor. It was off a 82-83 I think 280zx GL non turbo automatic. I have a 83 GL non/5spd. I did some tinkering with them and found out that the one i got from the junkyard is not reaching the weights and springs on the bottom inside of the distr. So now I have a new looking dist. that i cant use and an old one that is seized up. So idk. I was gonna try and take the piece I need off the newer one, but I dont know how to get the pin out that holds the gear that is on the shaft. If anyone knows what im talking about.

  3. Ok that pic helps a lot, if you look at the pic you posted the two bolts on the inside that are almost touching the inside of the dist. housing. You notice the lowest plate that those bolts hold, there are two small notches. my dist. is in the other notch unlike yours. I will try to switch um. thanks for the pic

  4. Ok, first of all thanks for reading my post, any help is great.

    My distributor froze up a couple days ago. So i found another distributor with brand new guts, but the housing in not to great condition.

    I transfered everything to my housing, well here is the problem. I think i misaligned something, when i start my Z all it does is whine and not catch. I know the rotar and shaft are turning, but something is not letting it start.

    I was wondering if someone can find me a picture of a 83 l28 non turbo distributor. I need to see what the distributor insides look like from the top view. Without the cap and rotor on. Thanks

  5. Ok, I have figured it out. The only problem I dont know if its fixable. Where the Vac Advance screws in(on the inside of the distributor). It screws into a plate that opens and closes the Advance from what i can see. Well, the plate that moves, does not move very well. It seems like its seized up or something. Wondering if anyone know of a way to fix this? Might go to pick a part and get a new distributor.

  6. Ok, I pulled the whole distributor out and I noticed there is some oil in the bottom where the distributor meets with the other shaft(oil pump?).I didnt know if this could be my problem? Also, my buddy said that the intake manifold might have a gasket leak, I just put a new one on not to long ago, so I dont think that is the problem. Since I got the dist. off im going to try and get a better look at the Advance.

  7. ok, i will try to make this a quick story of how it all started..i just replaced the whole top end, and it ran great except for the minor backfire for the first 10min. of driving. i started to replace all my eccs and car was starting to run better N/A l28. i started to replace the vacuum advance and the screw that holds it was stripped.

    so i had to get kinda rough with it so i had to start tapping it with a flat head and a hammer, i got it loose. next i had to loosen the screw below the rotor. i think the pieces i took off to get to the screw are the reluctor and something else.

    once i replaced the vacuum advance, i started the engine and it kinda didnt want to start and then the accel. started to go up slowly and loudly, and ends up with an idle of 4500, i tried lowering the distributor timing, but it wont go any lower. so today i put the old vacuum advance in and noticed i had two small rings almost look like spacers and they are very small and have lined ridges on the outside of the ring. so the car is still doing it.

    so i found some posts on here with similar problems but no answers and were mostly turbo's, i believe the assembly of the distr. is diff.

    so is it possible when i was tapping the screw that i jumped some teeth on the timing and now the oil pump and dist. are out of alignment???

    or can anyone tell me where these lil washer type things belong and if that might be the problem< they just look like spacers>?????

     

    right now my Z is in the driveway and i have no clue what to do, sucks i just replaced the whole top end

  8. ok, i think i know what the problem is......right b4 i had the head gasket go out i got the exhaust done. new cat and everything else. well i think its the cat. 3 days after the exhaust was on i noticed that the car had a weird smell and it seemed to get a lil hotter then normal then the gasket went, and today i walked by the muffler and noticed im not getting much exhaust flow, but it sounds ok. then tonight when i came home i got the clue, it smelt like rotten eggs not too much but just enough to notice, i think the new cat is either cheap or my car is running so rich it burned/backed up a new cat in 3 days. im gonna have it tested tomarrow, does anyone think this is a poss. now im worried i might burn the gasket again.

  9. ok, within the last two weeks, this is what i fixed/replaced. the head gasket went out a month ago. that is when the power went way down of course. so right now replaced timing chain/gasket, chain tensoner, head gasket and got the head shaved and fixed two cracked valves and had the lifters set. Also had the Distributor set

    right b4 the head went out i replaced all fuel injectors, fuel lines, vacuum lines, spark all basic tune up parts. New CAT and full exhaust and exhaust manifold.

    when i did the head i did have a waterpump bolt break. i still havent fixed it, i put some sealer in the coolent and all the power came back and went away withing about 10min. so i thought it may have been a seal, but idk.

    i also know that when i went to get smogged i couldnt pass, so im thinking about just changing out all emission controls on the whole motor.

     

    also i wont be able to do a lot of the troubleshooting till this wkend. thanks for everyone help so far.

  10. ok, i got the Z up and running and its been a project for awhile. my 280 sounds and idles perfect, except for.... my very very slow take off and all together hp is pretty much gone. A stock lil geo storm was being stupid on the freeway so i went to pass it and they hit the gas and i couldnt keep up. so i started tinkering with the Z. When i did the head one of the water pump bolts had broke off into the block, so i do have a very small leak in it and it doesnt overheat either, so for the time being until i have the time to fix that i decided to flush the radiator, so i drained it and refilled it and but some Bars leak and when i started up the Z. it had SO much more response and take off just like new, then after about 10min. of driving it went back to the slow lag of power. Is it possible that the leak is causing my loss?

    I also know i do need to change out my fuel injector connectors for sure, but they are holding a good connection. I just replaced vacumm lines, oil change, tune up, Maf rebuild. So what can it be? Your help and ideas will really help, also if anyone can possibly look at the Z and help troubleshoot it with me i have a couple things i can barter with for your help...thanks
