  1. The CD009 tranny from the 350Z is good to go and shifts really slick. I've never had one behind and LS but my previous 350Z with 12 pounds of boost put down solid hp and tq and with was smooth as butter. The T56 is a bit "chunky" but very solid and gates easy into desired gear for me with a short throw shifter. My 02. Jim

I've heard good and bad about them. They are definitely cheaper than a T56 even bought new. I'm curious about shifter placement and torque holding capacity.

  2. If starting from scratch I would not do a T56. I had a complete f-body donor so went that way but for competition it really sucks. It's very heavy, shifts slow and clunky, 5th gear is way too low and 6th is unusable. Really expensive to rebuild. If you have access to a cheap functional one they fit easy, shifter lines up perfect, and are pretty durable. This is my opinion after competing with one for 9 years now.

3.90 will get you going if you already have it but is too high IME. Also depends on your tire diameter though. 3.7 vs 3.54 or otherwise is going to depend again in tire diameter and the track you run.

What manual trans would you use? I've thought about the 350-370Z trans with adapter but with mixed reviews on durability behind a LS motors torque. Even considered a G Force T5.

  3. T-56 are hella expensive and I live near Toronto so play in a ton of stop and go traffic. I hit the wreckers and found a 4L80e for $400 CAD (about $11 US)

Dump oil all over yourself and the driveway and then wire wheel the bastard 80e. Steal all the cat litter in the house for the driveway, call it a day

11US is hilarious! I'm from Vegas but staying in Barrie with my girlfriend and pleasantly surprised with the exchange rate. Nice build. I just picked up my diff from Whitehead Performance, obviously made from titanium and gold plated for what I paid for it.

  4. Motor and trans are in. Shifter come through the hole as advertised. I will post pics when I can on Monday.....

I was able to install with the passenger header bolted up, there is plenty of room to do the driver header after the fact... Install was a snap, I hand tightened the entire mount on to the block including what bolts into the cross member uprights. Lifted the back of the car onto ramps and the front on jack stands just high enough to allow the hoist legs to roll under the car. I pre installed the tranny mount as well minus the part that will drill through the tunnel. My car is a 72, it had threaded "wings"/tranny mounts and after I trimmed off a small tab on the trans housing it fit in place very easy without any extra cutting and ability to use the stock mounts. Really slick or lucky, I'm not sure. Once I had the tranny in the tunnel and the bolts threaded through the mount, the motor mounts were already lined up. All I had to do was slip the bolt through and bolt it down. I unloaded the motor from the hoist, let it all settle in place and bolted her all down. All that remains is the additional supports through the tunnel but I'm waiting on those until I know for sure the tailhousing and rear end are lined up. Felt good to get this far, feel like I'm in the home stretch now. Pics coming soon.

I have a 71 with the threads for the threaded wings but my car came with them as a rolller. Would you happen to have any pics with the CX Racing trans mounted bolted it? I'm interested in what kind of adapter I'd need to fabricate.

  5. I'm totally happy with my CXR kit..... It works great for me and I'm happy with the quality.  with that said, Hoke is building stuff that seems just a tad better than everything else I've seen and if it was available at the time I probably would've gone that route. But to be totally honest, I have no regrets with my CX racing application.

What's your driveshaft length with the CX engine mounts, I'm assuming your diff is a is a R200?

I've been thinking about the CX kit but my trans tunnel doesn't have the upper wings. They were bolted in from what I can tell and didn't come with my car. I picked it up as a roller. Who did you use for a drive shaft and did you have to make adjustments on the pinion angle?

  7. Do you mind sharing more pictures of your cage? This is one of the next steps on my to do list.

The metal on these cars are super thin. I have no idea how any S30 survives 300ftlbs of torque and doesn't twist up like a soda can. Even the welds on the subframe to suspension attachment points look suspect. Any choice you make as far as a cage choose your seats first, get in a driving position and measure. If you drive on the streets without a helmet you don't want to bang up any body parts in the even of a accident or roll over. Door bars just won't work with the seats I have, not even swing outs. My car will be mostly street driven with some occasional auto cross or drags. Can't believe I've got 10k in this car already with no engine trans fuel system brakes or chassis harness. 2 years of pushing it around my small garage.
