  1. He is probably one of those guys that asked a question that has been asked and answered many times before and now he's butt-hurt.  I'm all about asking if you don't know, but what have you done to help yourself?

Look at it this way, at least you're known in the Datsun Community on and off the forums.  Why? Because you know how to hand over reality and common sense.

Much respect to you for that

  2. So after much trolling, searching and even looking for outsourced parts from asia, I cannot for the life of me find replacement headlight assemblies/buckets.  Now, clarification, my headlight buckets, aka sugar scoops, aka nacells are perfectly fine.  What is now being wasted away is the actually headlight bowls.

I have seen that there are bowls (both inner and outer) for other Datsuns (1200 B110, b220 etc) but nothin for the Z.  Closest I've seen is the inner bowl (holds the lamp for adjustment), but nothing for th outter housing.

Where do people go when their headlight bowls need replacement?

Unfortunetly where I am located there are no pick and pulls or junkyards that I could go and try to see if there are any Z remains.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

  3. Ok, well while I was working on my headlights not working issue, I decided to try changing the lights, maybe they burned out. Noticed that the head lamp bucket (the metal bowl assembly that holds the lights on the sugar scoop portion, were very rusted and the screws had seized onto it etc.

I figure well, while I'm at it, I'll just go and replace what I've found wrong....

    Haven't found anything at all.

I searched here and google and I keep getting the sugar scoop assembly.

So then I figured, well it is a 7 inch headlight, so other vehicles that used 7 inch headlamps must have the same or similar set up. But then that searched kept pulling up motorcycle bowls/assemblies

What have you guys found, fabricated or used to replace the metal bowls that hold the headlights?

I imagine that all s30's have the same headlight bowl? I have a 72' if that helps with anything

    Thanks in advance

  4. Hey a while ago I had done some extensive searching and managed to find 1 website that sold reproduction/replacement for the rails in the engine bay.

And now I lost the information :(

I've searched on here and on zcar.com and google couldn't find anything.

Checked MSA and Dragon and they don't have it. I'm not sure if maybe no one makes/carries it anymore?

Reason I need this is I'm ready for the next step on my 77, cutting panels an welding.

The floorpans (and rails) are getting replaced and so are the engine rails, since the sheet metal is peeling.

I know that Charlie Osbourne sells caps, but they are not true replacements. And there was another guy on this forum that replaced his rails, I have that information, but he used solid square tubing.

From a safety aspect, solid square tubing is very rigid, it will not flex.

So in the event of a frontal accident, the tube would more than likely break though the firewall and into my legs.

    Doesn't sound like fun.

Ok enough rambling, so does anyone know of where one can buy replacement engine rails (front frame rails)?

  5. Yeah I was pissed off that my camera died. I should have charged it the night before. And that's the problem with any cars here in the midwest area. The salt they use is so corrosive, that here in chicago it eats away at the asphalt.

I guess I'm just worried because I hear of all these people from California, Arizona or New Mexico that find their cars for dirt cheap (relatively) that are 'rust free'.

But talked to the guy a bit ago and we'll talk again on Friday when he gets back to bounce prices back and forth.

Maybe start at 5,200 and work up.

I'll let you guys know how it goes, hopefully I'll get to post pictures on Friday (finger's crossed)

  6. So in the market for a new Z, and looking around locally and found one about 20 minutes from my house.

    It's a 1972 240z VIN HS30 54926

The person who owns it, has owned it since 1977 (2nd owner), it was his first car and has maintained it since. It has 90,821 miles on it.

He did a restoration of the car a little over 5 years ago (finishing last year) which consisted of new floor pans, new frame rails, rebuilt engine and tranny, replaced the hatch, hood, fenders. Any rusted area on the car was cut out and new steel was welded into its place.

The suspension was dropped, sand blasted and then powder coated. Hydraulic lines and fuel lines were replaced as well. New bushings and boots.

ALL of the gauges work (speedo, tach, fuel, oil pressure and the clock as well).

The interior is all new, even has the choke handle on the lever.

The bumpers are the original chrome (was dipped into acid and re-chromed).

He could not find a good replacement panel for the rear body panels and the rocker panel cover so he had some made out of fiberglass. Asked him how they were attached and they were glued and then riveted on.

Rebuilt carbs, new weather stripping and seals, rebuilt window arms and regreased.

    Battery tray is clean.

He also POR-15'd the car and inside the frame rails.

All the turn signals, lights and heater elements work. He still has kept all the original parts of the car (dealership a/c and mags that came with it), currently has original tires with D hubcaps in really good condition.

It is a registered Antique Vehicle

He has a binder full of the receipts for any and all work done on it.

Oh and the dashboard is uncracked.....no cap.....

    And now the bad:

Very small amounts of surface rust underneath the car, rear right light is cracked (not broken but you can see the crack running through the reverse light)

Windshield is not original, the corner chipped on him when he was pulling it out for the restoration.

Headlight scoops are not metal, but fiberglass, paint is in really good condition but has small scratches here and there.

Antenna does not go all the way down stops about 4 inches from fully retracting, radio is not original had it replaced in 1981 so it looks like it belongs.

While replacing the master cylinder (with a rebuilt one) he spilled brake fluid (cleaned it up) but caused the paint on the engine frame rail to curl up, metal is clean underneath)

The car drives like a dream, no unusual clanking, rumbling or rattling. Steering is accurate, there is no play or shimmy in the steering.

It is a 4 speed manual original.

He is asking 6,500 for it with the extra rims, carb rebuild kit and all the original pieces parts and panels, NOS oil fuel air filters and gaskets.

I am honestly mostly interested in getting a z with as clean of a shell as I can.

He said the price is negotiable, and that in just having the ad up for 2 days he's gotten 5 responses.

I was thinking of offering him 5,500 working up to a maximum of 5,800 maybe even 6k.

Any thoughts on the quality to price ratio? For a clean car that has been restored/refurbished/refreshed recently?

Sorry I don't have any pictures of it, camera died on the way to see the car.

Thanks in advance for the input.

  7. Just realized that the MSA sale ends today...

I'm looking for a complete vinyl kit to replace the inside of my early 77 280z and the kit that MSA has on sale for the 280z is only the rear portion. The 240z kit they have on sale (not much more expensive, is the complete (both front and rear)

Comparing with the blackdragon automotive kit for the 280z which runs $440, has everything but the price is a turn off (so's the color but that can be changed)

My question is, does the 240z interior vinyl fit into the 280z, or did they change the dimensions of trans tunnel, wheel arches etc?

MSA Sale - Interior vinyl kit

I did a search on the interior forum and didn't find anything for viny/fabric swap. Granted I am pressed for time (sale ends today) and didn't do a complete 100% search, so any quick replies would be most appreciated.

Thank you for the input and time, and I'll take any flaming or ass chewings
