Else do this:  Grab a hunk of wire and run a new Tach signal wire from the (-) post of the coil to the resistor under the dash. (this can be temporary, just as a test, so you can do it "quick and dirty"...)

The Tach signal MUST go through the resistor.  The resistor is always outside the dash harness under (back behind) the glove box.  It's a small square-ish thing with two wires.  (it's in one of the pictures above)

CUT the blue wire (coming from the original coil and ignition module) a few inches from the resistor and splice in your new wire - you're replacing the original wiring to the resistor with your new wire.

From the wiring diagrams, it looks like the '75 and '76 have two blue wires - the '77 and '78 have a blue from the coil and a Blue/White out to the Tach.  If you have a '75 or '76, you'll have to verify which of the two blue wires at the resistor goes to the Tach and what one comes from the coil/ignition module...  (In all cases, the Blue wire also goes to the stock ECU, so make sure to abandon everything but the wire going from the resistor to the Tach)

See if the Tach works now.

This is an old thread and it saved me much heartache.  Thank you cgsheen for posting this way back in 2015.  My 78 has a solid blue wire that used to be hooked to the negative post on the coil, (I'm installing Megasquirt) so I ran a new wire as discribed above, works like a charm.

  2. I think I remember the ECU being different for manual and auto transmissions,.... I have a manual ECU that I won't be using.

The 83 head is different though, from what I've read it has hydraulic lifters and it not as desired as an 82.

I can't give the reasons why.... Just random reading.

  3. I have a 78Z and was looking for a 5 speed transmission, I found a guy that had one and bought it. It had 280Z written on it with a paint pen.  Well I got it home and spent hours scrubbing and cleaning it and finally got around to installing it. I don't have a lift so I was on the ground cussing and fussing. My son offered to lend a hand and we had it within a half inch of home and he said "Dad, none of the bolt holes are lining up over here. I had noticed the same thing on my side so we pulled it back off and walked off the pain.

I have a Borg T5 from a '82 ZXT, a stock '78 four speed from my car and this unidentified 5 speed from Charlotte, NC.  I'll let the picture speak for itself.

Any idea what the one on the right is? The clutch disk fits the input shaft, my 280z driveshaft fits the back side but that bell housing is NOT a Z or ZX.

I can't even resell it because I have no idea what it is.

    Any help would be appreciated

    That's Beautiful!!

I'm considering doing the swap on my '78 manual 280Z.

I Found a running stock donor '82 ZXT automatic for $2200 with 148K miles.

I figured this would be a good starting point.

    I have a few questions......

In your opinion is that price a good starting point for me? The exterior is pretty rough on the donor I don't anticipate about getting much out of it when I'm finished.

Other than the required parts for the turbo swap, are there other desirable parts on the 82' like brakes or anything that may be considered an "upgrade" that are readily bolted on?

What type of money should I be budgeting for the restoration of the engine and other components that the swap may benefit from like an inter-cooler? How necessary are additional upgrades?

Thanks for documenting the process it is inspiring!

    Aaron

I'd be a bad person to answer these questions but I think an auto '82 for $2200 is steep.  I spent $1k on my donor '82 5 speed and after reading some I think I paid too much. BUT I will say the '82 head is preferred over the '83 hydraulic so I've read.

Mine wasn't running and I had it totally rebuilt. I've got $9K in the rebuild but it wasn't to OEM. I had forged pistons and rods added along with just about anything else you could think of. Overkill? I'm sure.

I have the I/C fitted, I still need to work out the electric cooling fans and then comes the fuel management.

  5. I'm pretty sure I'm going with SDS over Megasquirt, I actually already have the MS system from about a year ago. I found out about SDS from a guy I bought my intercooler from. SDS is an aviation based company that also supports the street types like myself. It's expensive, .... I'll let you all know

thanks D9inger!!! that is one bueatiful engine.

I hope that shows you what you wanted. It's still on an engine stand in my overcrowded garage and it's 90+ degrees outside down here in NC so it'll probably be the fall before I'm willing to go outside and do the install.  I've become a puss to the heat, so I could remove the manifolds and take some more pictures. I'm not a big fan of NC in July and August. It's just plain miserable outside.

  7. I found a few, I should have taken some more pictures before I installed the manifolds.

I'm going with the stock turbo for now, it's an easy R&R even after installation. I've read the stock turbo will do for up to 12psi, anyway that's an easy swap later.

hey d9inger, you have more pictures to share of the p&p? intake, exhaust? thanks.

I'll look, I don't know if I'd call it a polish but my idea of polish might be different than David Vizards'.

    It's smooth but not "polished".

Seriously?  THE David Vizard?  He's still alive?

Yes, but when I went to pick it up my engine builder (Terry Walters, Roanoke, VA) told me he was in the hospital in Charlotte. I'm not sure why or how he's doing but yes, the David Vizard did it. I had never heard of him, so when my builder told me he was willing to do it I googled him. I knew right away I'd be crazy not to. He oversized the valves, custom ground the cam, flowed the head, etc., I'm pretty excited to drive it.
