  1. I bought this 240Z with some work done to it, but about the only thing that it came with that I would keep is the tranny. All I know at this point in time is that it is a 5 speed, so it must be from a later car, but I have not had a chance to get it on a lift and look at it closer. What should I look for to ID it better?
  2. I bought this car planning to build a performance car, but I'm starting to think that I will need a stereo in it. After getting it mechanically sound, I moved into the dash to stick a CD deck in and found myself stumped. In my dash there are only about 4 wires not connected to anything, and none of them are hot. The pervious owner had a CD deck in the thing, but I’m not finding a 12v wire I can use for power or a constant 12v for memory. Can you guys help me out and tell me what colors I should be tracing to figure this out? Right now I’m wondering if the wires are actually missing and it would be faster for me to pull the dash and run some new wire.
  3. I know in the Z32's there are enough differences between the VG30DE and the VG30DETT that it's easier to get a different engine, but what are the differences in the L28E and L28ET engines? Could you just move the heads and such over to a non-turbo L28, or are the pistons and everything different?
  4. I was looking to get a system on my Z32 before I wrecked it, and someone told me there was a system for the 240z.... is this true?
  5. What needs to be adjusted to make it work? I am getting conflicting information, and do not have both to look at right now.
  6. I am trying to choose between doing an RB25 and an L28ET swap on my 71 240z, but I can't really find one good answer here (Seems people just argue). Do you guys know of a good site that can give me a run through of the mods required to not only seat the engine, but to get the whole drive train working, and some info on the potential of the Rb25 or L28ET? Yes, I searched the forums, that's why I want to find a second opinion
  7. What is the best rear end (LSD) to put into these datsuns? Also, what mods are there when you drop an L28ET into the 240z? Are the mounts the same? Do I have to make a new mount for the 5 speed tranny?
  8. Where is the best place to look for bolt ons and mods for an L28? Also, another 240z I'm looking at is almost stock, and I need to find good wide fenders for it (not those sad little flares I see people with all the time). I want the whole rear quarter panels. Any ideas?
  9. Ok, say we go with an L28. What times can a 240z laying 300 hp from an L28 run? I know that an RB26 doesn't really make power unless your in the high end of the power band, but I have no idea of the torque or powerband of an L28. I should be able to get wide enough tires uner the thing to get traction, but I don't know if the L28 puts down enough torque, or if I can transfer enough power to the ground to run good times.
  10. I just never thought about it. What is required to get an L28ET to make serious power? The car needs to be running 12's. Where would the best place to find some information on doing an L28 swap, and can it take the abuse of the high boost and most likley NOS? I am thinking that the RB25 or L28 will be my best bets, but I need some more info on both, and the work behind the swaps. Any sites you guys might know of on these swaps would be a great help.
  11. I am trying to decide which 6 to put into a 71 240Z, but can't really decide. The choices are between a VQ35DE, RB25, VG30DETT, or an RB26DETT. The trick is getting one that I can install without a huge headache, and isn't only good for a single use. The car will need to be straight line fast, but also be able to driven around town, and also handle a good road course. Right now I am thinking about an RB25 since I can get a whole front clip easy enough and for around $2900 shipped. What are your opinions on these engines?
  12. I am looking to get curb weights on 240z - 280z's and do some comparing. Yeah, I'm thinking I want to start a project of one of these old Z's, but all I can seem to get a hold of are 280's and I want to see if one would work. Soon I hope to sell my other project, an 85 300zx, and use the money to buy an older Z.
  13. I thought it was only a part time all wheel drive...... that it only shifted forward when traction was lost in the rear. Ahhh who knows. Thanks for the info, now I just have to figure out which I want to go with. Do you by any chance know if the GTS-T will match with the Z ass end, or if I will need to take it's drive line and rear diff?
  14. I am still looking at doing an engine swap, and would love to be able to fit an RB26 in my Z32, with the 6 speed transmission. I know that it should fit, and since the turbos sit to the side I should be able to fit the intakes as well, but will the transmission fit? Isn't the GT-R transmission larger then the standard, and has anyone heard of mounting one on a Z32? Don't start going off on this idea, it's just an idea. I am trying to decide what engine to start building ad getting ready to go into the Z, and even though I would like to do something unique like this, I have a feeling I will end up doing a TT swap with a VG30DETT anway.
  15. I'm really hard on engines. I can spend most of the time shifting at like 4,000 rpms, then all of a sudden I'll get into a run and it will see 6,500. I'm mostly afraid of gaskets going out, but since I have to pull it to easily change all the seals and gaskets, I will replace everything at once.
  16. While I am still undecided to as what swap I eventually want to do to my Z32, I do know I will need to rebuild this NA engine to survive while I continue my research. The engine is approaching the 190,000 mile mark, and I plan on doing the rebuild just past 200,000. While it's out of the car I will replace all the belts, fly wheel, water pump, and whatever else looks like it's in need or work. Now, since this car is slow and under powered, I plan to add a NOS setup. Do you think it's worth the money to rebuild with forged pistons and better rods?
  17. I have never seen a good TT for under $10,000....... and my NA was only just over $3000.
  18. Thanks for the suggestions. The TT swap shouldn't be too bad since the engine mounts are the same, and the NA transmission will bolt right up. I just have to grind the housing to accomidate the larger TT flywheel and shim the starter to get it to match. My biggest problem would be figuring out what else I need to move over...... It would be easier to buy a whole car that was wrecked, as you say, but that's hard to find.
  19. It has 187,000 miles on it, and I want to start getting another engine ready to go in. The car is a 1990 300ZX NA, and of course I won't be putting another NA into the car, and started planning on swapping a TT in. Now, already thinking about an engine swap, I was curious if I should be looking into an RB26TT or something rather then the VG30DETT. Here comes the problem, I need the swap to be as fast as possible, because this car is also my daily driver. For a TT swap I only have a few wiring issues I have yet to figure out, but I don't know half of what it would take to do an inline 6. Do you guys think it's worth going for a VG30DETT to save time, or do you have a better engine in mind? Note, I am not a mechanic, and would be doing some of it myself and paying the local import shop to do what I couldn't. I am also a college student who is broke half the time.
