  1. You have the right idea. The swap will be well thought out. When I add aftermarket items to the 305 I will make sure they fit the 350 soon to come very well. My other toy is a 68 400 Firebird that has a 68 Gran Prix 350 horse block , the correct #16 heads, balanced short block, crane cam that keeps the exhuast valves open longer for better exhuast scavaging . I chose it due to the heads are only rebuilt & not modified other than a 3 angle valve job & correct valve springs for the cam , comp cam 1.52 roller tip rockers, edelbrock performer rpm intake & edelbrock 750 carb, hei distributer with a recurve kit, hooker headers with a flowmaster american thunder exhuast & a msd ignition box . I am also changing the 68 from an automatic to a stick. The rear is a 3:55 posi.
  2. Thanks guys we all have the same goal ....to build & drive our rides. Being a 40 year old man I have learned that there is nothing new under the sun so picking someone elses brain for answers saves me from many wasted hours , busted knuckles , wasted money & my kids learning new words that they better not repeat in my presents. I got everthing that I needed except what kit is better JTR , MOTORSPORT v8 conversion ,brand x or a mix ? It is easy to tell the difference in knowlege & wisdom by the responses that I have read. Hybrid z is an excellent source for usefull info & to view the limitless talents proud to display the pride & joy they built or paid to have built.
  3. The 305 was not my first choice of motors for my z but has become very ideal for my intentions . I have a 5.0 & trans from an 86 mustang gt ( 5 speed) & I have a Chevy 350 4 bolt main block just waiting for a 383 stroker kit. The 305 is my entry level start into a v8 z. This car will be modified over a period of time . The Ford drivetrain has too many conversion issues ( although I think a Ford 302 sounds much better than a Chevy small block any day of the week ) & has many other advantages . I dont want to start my v8 z experiance with a 500 horse frame twisting drivetrain breaker . I want to modify this car gradually without changing the original Nissan design at the start . I dont want a fuel cell & a 6 point roll cage . I want a car that I can tailor to my( ADULT )liking over a period of time without spending my kids college funds or end up hating the car because I over powered it way too soon & have no choice but to over engineer everything else to make it safe & reliable . I have a muscle car ...now I want a good handling , good performance , good looking touring coupe that my wife can drive without instructions or fearing that she will wrap it around a tree. The z car is to me a sexy car with male body lines ( not like a girlie Miata or an early rx 7 ) , well thought out interior ( instrument placement ) , my 6 foot 3 frame fits well , My arm hangs out of the window & still can reach the steering wheel with great comfort . These cars are a breeze to work on also. I was hooked at 17 when I bought my 1st 240 even after my rather large older brother said he would kill me if I bought that worn out piece of garbage . Later in life I gave him a worn out 77 280z as a gift. Trust me guys I have built this car in my head at least a 100 times. I build them to suit my needs ....simple & fun .
  4. The regulator does just what the word means. The fuel pump will still run cool & should not burn out due to the regulated pressure drop. The fuel pump is kept cool by the fuel injected motors having a return line for un used gas. The pump is rated at so many gallons per hour. The fuel injected motor has a regulator also. The f.i fuel pumps are set up to push fuel & not pull it. The return line keeps a constant flow of fuel going . Have you guys ever wondered why a lake will freeze but a stream will not ( constant flow doesnt freeze but can be very cold ) .
  5. I have seen many v8 conversions on the web. I have not seen a simple yet clean gas tank install. I am looking into sealing up the stock filler door , cutting out the spare tire well & buying a 69 Camaro fuel tank & having it resized. This tank has a fairly large filler neck that could be installed behind a flip down license plate made to fit in the exact place the license plate is located on the 240z now. Has any one found another tank that doesnt involve a resize. I do not want a fuel cell in the hatch & risking a gas spill that I will live with for a long time. I dont want to lose cargo space.
  6. Is that the same z that is seen in the video getting sideways on the street ? Pure evil !
  7. Many thanks guys. I will go ahead with the 305 swap . I love the sound of a v8 over a v6 anytime ( the 350z has the best sounding v6 that I have ever heard ) .The torque is another issue. If I wanted a 6 cylinder I would build the low mileage 6 that it came with ( 73 240z ). This car will be driven by not only me but my wife also. If it is brute horsepower that I want ...I can get it with my 68 400 Firebird . I have owned a 71,72,73 & a 77 as far as Z's go . The 71 being my favorite . I need a v8 Z to complete me . The 4.3 v6 sounds cool but I am not interested in spending as much on a v6 rebuild/supercharged motor as I would on a built v8 ...unless it was a Grand national turbo v6. The simplicity of a carburated v8 with hei /msd ignition , block hugger headers & a small cam is just what the doctor ordered for my illness. I will get some photos going soon.
  8. In a small light weight car like a 240 ...even with the 73 being heavier than the 71 I had ( a lot of the 71 parts are going on the 73) ...the 305 will be fine with a small hp cam & a edelbrock performer rpm air gap intake .I do have a 350 4 bolt main block awaiting a rebuild later.
  9. The t-5 is from a Mustang gt. I took apart a 1986 Mustang gt & kept the engine & trans. I will use the Chevy Astro parts & the automatic from it (astro) . I have not found a Ford engine kit as easy to install in the 240z as the Jtr & Motorsports for the Chevy engine. I wish there was something out there to my liking since the little 5.0 ford motor in my eyes is todays 327 of yesteryear. As many know the 5.0 (Ford ) from 86 had horrible heads ( I trashed them ) . The short block & trans are for sale. These will provide $$$$ for the v8 swap also. Hey is anyone interested in a 73'000 mile 240z engine 1973 , a 1977 5 speed trans 280z attached to motor in car ( can hear run , still in car ). The 73 6 cyl has weber down drafts , crane ignition conversion xr700 , a motorsport header & I also have the 4 speed from the z that I took out when the car had 39'000 actual miles .
  10. Hello Z owners. I have a good running 305 that came out of a one owner Chevy 1500 pick up. I do not have any drive pulleys , balancer , water pump etc...however I have complete access to a 1989 or 90 Astro van with a 4.3 v6. I have been told that the 4.3 is a v8 with the last 2 cylinders erased ( 8 & 7 ) . I have been told that all that parts that I need are a direct bolt on to the 305 v8 including the trans . The trans is a rebuild in the Astro . I will also use the ac compressor ( short unit ) . The 305 will be carburated. The trans is supposed to be a 700 4r . Have I been told correctly or is it a waste to tear down this astro van ? Is the JTR engine kit better than the Motorsport ? I am sure some of you guys & girls have answers for me .Please dont hold back the valuable knowledge needed for me to be on my way to a base v8 conversion. I have the mechanical knowledge and the tools to do this conversion so please be as in depth as you can.I also have a 5.0 Mustang ( rebuildable complete short block 1986 ) & a t-5 ( same car ) with flywheel & clutch assembly for sale ( Illinios based ). I do not have the harness but I do have the computer ( 5 spd with ac)
  11. There was a web site that a guy had posted his whole convertable transformation. I cannot remeber and cannot find it. The conversion was done using the original hatch ( reskinned ) and was now a trunk. Has anyone done this with any success? I love the lines of the 69 - 78 z but I dont want to ruin the car if the structure cannot be reinforced after the roof is cut off . Many thanks to you all on the last topic I submitted.
  12. Guys & girls I have a 73 240z in Illinois ( salt belt ) . This will be a Ford v8 soon. What is the proper way to install glass 1/4 panels ? Is it over the old or cut off the old ? I dont want cracks . The frame will be connected from front to rear. I am leaning on a donor car for steel parts . I have a steel belt cut right side 1/4 & a glass belt cut right side but nothing for the left side. No one makes the steel panels anymore so I have been told.
