  1. Update: My Father finally passed away, My buddy with the cable clutch plans moved to Texas and I still haven't gotten the 5 speed in the Z. I bought a 1927 Model T coupe and put the LSC HO engine and T5 in it. Got it hooked up today and cranked it up. Had to use a Wilwood 260-1333 slave cylinder to get enough travel to disengage the clutch. It has 1 3/8" pull where most of the others only have 1". Maybe if I live long enough I'll get it in this Summer. I have another HO engine and 5 speed sitting in the middle of the garage ready to go..

  2. OK thanks, I know what you mean. I put the engine in mine about 18 yrs. ago and just happened to make an extra set of motor mounts at the time. When I found this site I dug them out and made some drawings of them for the guy's that wanted to try them. A buddy of mine modified the Z pedals with a quadrant he made that works good also. I've got his plans somewhere if I could find them...

  3. Could be, see how extensive the rust is and what condition the engine and trans are in. Rust is the big problem with a Z, a buddy of mine bought one and when he tried to pick it up with a fork lift the front clip broke off. The engine looks like a junk yard special, do a compression check or leak down if you have the equip.

  4. The FE was used in the cobra after the 289 so it would probably be applicable to the Z.

    With aluminum intake and aluminum heads you will drop quite a bit of weight also. I have a 428 in my Model A coupe with 2x4's and it's a handful if you get on it. One of the problems you will have is making headers for the installation. I did a set for the Model A and it was a pain. Also may have problems with the transmission tunnel as the bellhousing and transmission on the FE is a little larger than the SBF.

    What you run into on the front of the oil pan is the fact that the oil pump is at the front of the pan. It has to be deep enough to clear the oil pump. I used the stock Datsun fuel pump originally with a pressure regulator to drop the fuel pressure for the carb. I saw one Z years ago that had the firewall massaged with a sledge hammer to get enough clearance to move the engine back, it was a drag car. The owner wanted to get the engine back as far as he could for weight distribution. You can put anything in anything if you have the time, money, patience and a big enough hammer...

  6. The first pics show the positioning of the engine in the Z. When I re-do the mounts I'm going to move the engine back about an inch or two and down a little. My buddy that did his said that the T-5 shifter fit into the hole in the console almost perfectly by doing this.

    He made up a quadrant and mounted it to the firewall where the clutch master cylinder was. Then used the stock clutch cable instead of a hydraulic clutch. I'm going to try to get together with him as soon as I get finished taking my Father for his Radiation treatments. Should be a couple weeks if he doesn't have any more complications from his surgery.

  7. Hey it worked! Here are the engine mount plans. If a "Hillbilly" could do this swap twenty years ago with a hot wrench, and a 110V mig welder you guy's shouldn't have too much trouble with it today.

    I'm thinking about re-doing mine with a new 5.0 and 5 speed when things calm down a little. I've found a T-5 that needs a new mainshaft and bought a shaft off e-bay so guess I'll be trying to get info on rebuilding a T-5 soon.

    Yea, big block Ford performance parts tend to be a little expensive. You can have the flanges cut at a machine shop, buy some elbows and tubes and do your own if you have the time and resources. That's what I ended up doing on the FE engine I put in my Model A coupe. Used a Speedway Motors set for a big block brand X and modified them.

    For the 460 in the '47 I used some stock cast iron ones that I sandblasted and powder coated. So far they are doing OK but the engine has only been run a couple hours so the court is still out on how they will last.

    I've seen some, but I'm at the station today and don't have any catalogue's with me. Plug "big block Ford forum" into your search engine and you should come onto the 385 series engine forum. Post your queston there or search their previous posts. They should be able to get you a quick answer. They've been a lot of help to me, I've got a 460 in my old '47 Coupe I've been working on now for about two years. Just got if fired up last nite.

    I think Sanderson Headers have some but don't hold me to it.
