olds 403

Hey guys, my question is about this engine and how it compares to a chevy 350 or 327, the reason is that i would like to fit it into my 79 zx, and my father inlaw has this olds 403 just lying on the floor in his garage, it came out of my mother inlaw's trans am, i think the car was a 77.

He told me it was an olds but me not convinced did a little research and infact found out that he was right, Back to my question, I would like to use this engine but all the info i gathered was for chevy engns.

what are some of the diferences between the chevy and the olds, because i want to use the brakets, mounts, and other misc. items listed for the chevy swap on this olds eng. Is this possible? I read that this engine was a small block but my father inlaw say its a big block, I whant to save me the trouble of making my own mounting brakets i prefer just buying one that have been out and other people have used.

So can i use the chevy "parts" on the olds engine? or do i need to get a chevy bolck?

Anny advice is apreciated,

I am personally a huge fan of the Olds V8's. I used to have a '70 442 with a .060" over 455 with 12.5:1 compression and plenty of roller cam. It ran 11.0's on M/T Sportsman Pros(this was before ET Streets) through the mufflers. I have toyed with the idea of a 403 with the steel crank from a 330(all 330's have steel cranks and all SB Olds share the same stroke, even the 403) and some C cast big block heads and a Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and matching cam. As for the HP potential of the Olds V8 The 403 has something like a 4.350" bore(can't remember exactly) and a stroke under 3.5", talk about big bore short stroke, sounds like an RPM engine to me. The main problam with the Olds engines is that the big block heads are just about right for a mid sized small block, fortunatly they are a bolt on. They will lower compression about a point on a stock small block. I think an Olds can make as much HP as any other small block given the proper cylinder head flow(ported Edelbrock's) If your plan is to do it cheap, go chevy. If your plan is to be differant, go for the Olds.
