wire from starter to starter solenoid smoking? :(

hi, I've just got some stuff done to my resonantly bought 1971 240z and was ready to try to start it in 6 years of sitting. I went to start it, and nothing happened just the little..i guess "voltage regulator" was clicking: then the starter started clicking, then it started slowly turning over the engine really REALLY slow "while my dad was tapping on the starter". Mean while the little wire that goes from the starter to the starter solenoid was smoking, and burning so i stopped cranking it. what do y'all think this could be? I'm thinking the starter could be very rusty inside and trying to free up causing a load on the little wire.. any opinions on this would be very nice thanks :)

P.S I cleaned almost all the connections. :(
