HELP!!.......engine problems!

ok, so after i got it back from the shop, it ran fine, but rich and had problems starting. so this weekend i went to st. louis to visit my dad and he tinkered with the distributor and the fuel needles on the carb. so the idle went down, but keeping it at like 3 grand, it would pull and jerk a little bit. so in my infinite wisdom, i start messing with the distributor and the fuel needles, now, here are the symptoms:

1) when you rev it hard in neutral, the needle goes to 6000, sticks for a little bit, then comes back down.

2) it's backfiring again

3)it's idling really low compared to before

4)i think it might be burning oil cuz the pressures is going down (maybe the engine itself, not sure)

5) it kinda seemed like it was eating gas (more than usual)

6) i lost a LOAD of power, like 30 hp or something like that. it's not pulling as hard.

i just drove it 50 miles from decatur, and i have to go back FOR SURE tomorrow morning, so is there and way i can fix this, maybe with the help of you guys? i have a wrench to loosen the dist. and a screwdriver to adjust the fuel needles, no timing light. i really need to get this fixed tonight, so anyone with some suggestions would be thanked tremendously. thanks.

I can't remember what you've done to figure this motor out yet, but here are some ideas:

1) Compression check - are they all close?

2) Leakdown test (less than say 10% at most?)

3) vacuum leak?

4) ignition system o.k.? Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, module?

5) Fuel pressure o.k.?

6) Now start messing with the carb. That's a book to post. Try to find out how far out from the average setup (jet sizes, etc.) your carb is from standard baseline starting settings and parts for the carb.

HTH,

Certainly sounds like a vacuum leak, especially with the needle hanging at the top. Try the old carb cleaner around the manifold and carb. Good Luck!!

It is idleing lower now because the timeing is too low.

It is back firing because the timing is too low.

It has lost power because the timeing is too low.

The lower idle speed will also reduce oil presssure.

Adjusting the idle mistures screws (which you call needles has nothing to do with the symptoms you have described.

Fix it by turning the distributor counter clockwise a LITTLE at a time. Then drive it and turn it again. If you turn it too much it will be hard to start andwill spark knock.

If you think it is burning oil. CHECK IT if it is low add some.

SELL THE CAR. YOU DON'T NEED IT. Go buy something that you dont have to work on.
