DAD
I recently purchased a tall deck 427 real cheap, $100, the carb, water pump and balancer was all that was missing, it is out of a 1965 C60, Turned out it has been rebuilt by a top rebiulder. The engine was installed about 5 years ago, it has always smoked, some times it would clear up after you would run it for awhile. It was used only to haul grain from the feild to the grainery in the fall,,,so very low miles on it. Maybe the rings never seated? The Machanic that installed it, has always worked on it so got all the low down on it. To make a shorter story here. I want to know for sure what the rod length is? I have heard different things, like from 6.135 to 6.535,, Seems to me it would be closer to 6.135 as all the other stock BBC'S. It is .060 over, and "NO" ridge at all, cylinders are very clean as well is the tops of the flat top pistons. Bearings hardly show any wear at all. And, IF , it still has the right rods as it should have, will this hold up with 8% over driven 6-71 blower? With the exception of new rings and bearings of coarse. I had a freind one time that had a stock HP 454 he put a blower on and ran it for several years with no problem, it was 8% or a little better. I'm sure it had the dimple rods. Did the tall decks have these rods also? If this wont work the way it is, then I want to up date the rods and pistons. With the H beam rods and a good set of flat tops. However I would want to use a longer rod,,,what would you recomend,,,,,,,,,,,,, Sure would like to hear from someone that has been there before,, PS this will be a street/strip combo
jt1
Be sure you can find an intake for the tall deck, I think they are specific. As long as you do all the stuff you normally do for a blower, I don't see a problem. jt
