Differential gearing

What gearing would be recommended for a moderately modified 5.0 with T-5. I've got a burned out bearing and need to swap. I'm looking for a 3.70 LSD to replace my 3.56 open diff. Has anyone used 4.10 or 3.7? I plan to take this car to the track for driving schools. I am not a 1/4 mile person.

Howdy Evan,

 

Welcome to the site; your rear gears of choice all depends on what your engine is capable of & how your car is set up to handle its capabilities. What RPM does your engine come into peak torque & peak hp?

 

If your 5.0 is mildly souped up then we can atleast assume 300-350hp(?): yes-no?

 

350hp at 5500rpm's w/3.7 gears & @ 26" tires is going to net you 100mph in 4th gear (Standard trans) & about 60mph in 5th gear at 2500rpms.

 

If you're going road racing-be prepared to break things...especially that stock 5spd!

What height tires? I ran 3.73's in my Mustang with stock height tires and ofund that it was REALLY short in 1st gear. Highway buzzed just a little bit. Ended up with 3.55's later on and have 3.27's in the car now with a Tremec. For road racing the 3.7 ought to be fine but you could end up in 5th which is a weak gear in the T5 so beware.

i run my car on road race tracks and just switched to 3.7 lsd from 3.54.with a 5.0 you would want a 3.54 if the car is a daily driver.i just put a set of 3.55 in a stock 89 5.0 and it works great.the oem t5 needs a world class gear set kit installed though for road course work.the oem t5 has a 3.35 first to use with 2.73 or 3.08 rear.the ratio spread id too wide for track use.the ratio you use really depends on if you use car for daily use or just a weekend car.my car sees a very fast freeway commute so low gears are out of the question.

The car is documented on my home page. Check it out, I'm sure you'll find it interesting. The car is a weekend car with possible use on the track. I would like to build up to the level where I'm confident enough to take it out to Mosport. Right now there are a few issues to tackle. I really would prefer to stay out of 5th gear. I just about hit 220kph (122mph) on the back straight of Mosport with my BMW. I don't have as much HP in this car, but its a lot lighter. I guess 350HP is not out of the question. I have been toying with the notion of putting in a world class T5. Currently, the unit is from a '93 mustang. Are there any options for a tranny? Am I stuck with a 355 rear end?

that means there's another 5L /t5 conversion out there now...

 

a couple questions..

how did you do the clutch?

steering/motormounts?

 

mine should be on the road today!...

The clutch uses a CNC unit. The wheelbase on the GTO is extended 4" forward to match the Ferrari. This solved the problem with the oil pan and the steering rack. The steering column inserts into the rack through a stock hole in the front cross member. Its cheating a bit, but after all the work extending the wheelbase, I think its only fair.

I have a 5L and T-5 in my 1974 260. I use 245/50/15 tires(24.7 in tall), and a 3.545:1 rear gear. The car is really streetable, and does well at the track. In normal daily driving, I don't use first gear (too easy to spin the tires). I use second through fifth. On the highway, 70mph is 2300 rpms. I tried a 3.70 gear and changed it after only two weeks. I like the 3.545 gear much better. I wish I had a 3.36 gear.
