Guest Anonymous
Ladies and gentlemen, I bring to you an idea that's time has come. I have stumbled across something in 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords that gave me an idea. Summit Racing is selling GT-40 Ford Racing Crate engines for just shy of 3500 bucks, slam a Vortech S Series supercharger with 8 lbs of boost completely polished for another $3250, then add a high flow fuel injector system to it all, not to mention all the neccasary computer, fuel, cooling, and exhaust components, and you got yourself a mean mother of a Z. As for the trans, nothing but the best, a Richmond 6 speed. Don't forget the standard Ford 9 inch rear-end with 3.11 gears for those nice top end speeds. As far as I know, a fuel injected GT-40 engine has not been planted into a Z yet, but if anybody out there knows of one, let me know. Personally, I'd love to have a one of a kind setup like that, so long as it hasn't been done yet. If it is neccasary, I'll add nitrous for extra pickup, but a supercharger should be plenty of boost. All that will leave is a massive fuel bill to top off the two 22 gallon fuel cells sealed inside the hatch, not to mention the factory fuel tank. All that for those nice 400 mile midnight cannonball runs between college and what I call home. If any of you have any advice as for dropping the 302 GT-40 engine into the tight compartment that Datsun provided for their customers, let me know. I hear a chevy is easy to fit in a Z, but Ford is more difficult, that's why I'm taking this task.
BLKMGK
Hehe, new here huh? Go over to MikeSCCA's page - fuelie 5.0 fits right in there A 351W, now THAT I've not yet seen. Better yet get the Ford 396cube crate motor!
74_5.0L_Z
I have a fuel injected 5.0L / T5 in mine. I've been driving it for over a year. It's not a GT40, but will soon exceed the GT-40 in power. I just ordered a cam, and Edelbrock aluminum heads. I already have 1.7 roller rockers, 73mm MAF, 24 lb/hr injectors, dual 2.5 inch exhaust. I have visions of a supercharger / turbos in the future, but who knows. Good Luck, Dan McGrath
Guest scca
Dan, let us know how the heads help out.. i'd consider alum heads and whatever i need to go to pass the 6K stumbling block. since i still dont have a tach i dont know where it is - i recall you mentioning a 6250 rev limiter? how much did the larger 73mm body help... wondering where to start.. i just want it to pull a "little" longer in each gear.. guess i should get the guages in but we are gonna run out of sunny weather in about a month so i want to drive it till then... BLKMGK
6250 is the stock rev limiter. You can get chips to bump that up if you want but I'm not sure how high or what other benefits you might get out of it. Hrm, Mike I've got some 1.7 bolt-down roller rockers on my shelf ;D Stock the motor probably needs exhaust first, intake second, TB, and then I think heads become the cork. I thought you weren't going to hot rod this motor? (lol) Hrm, if you want to get real crazy we can talk about a pair of turbos and a plug-in DFI unit. I think you'd twist the convertible in half! P.s. Saw the price list for 86-93 Paxton 'chargers the other day. My friends shop is now a dealer for them as well as ATI. A "standard" NOVI charger kit was less than 2K but I don't recall the exact price. Not sure I can work a deal but if this perks up any of the Ford guy's ears let me know and I'll see what I can do. 8lbs of boost...
74_5.0L_Z
Hey BLKMGK, Do you have any other Hipo 5.0 parts on the shelf that you might part with . Thanks, Dan McGrath
BLKMGK
What are you looking for? My friend's shop does Mustangs all day long so there's usually parts coming in and out fairly often. Shipping is a PITA mind you but if there's something you can't find that I can I'm willing to try and help. In Mike's case I owe him Not much on my shelves other than what I've mentioned already. Stock shifter, broken clutch cables, some old gauges.
Guest scca
i guess the intake and TB and whatever will help to start.. i think my exhaust is big enough alum heads would be nice but no hurry- that was more for a cool factor than anything.. oh and weight saving too... i was looking at the GT40 intake looks nice - but will it help much or is it too big for street.. and yeah turbos would be nice IF it had a roof... the power actually seems fine- it just runs into a brick wall when it seems like it should just keep pulling... combination of TB- intake and revlimiter??? BLKMGK
I'm not sure on th ebrick wall - get a good tach on it and see where the "wall" is. It might very well be the rev limiter. GT-40 intake is a good one as is the Cobra intake which can be more readily ported. Nothing wrong with the GT-40 on the street but you WILL lose some low end torque, in a light Z that's a no brainer IMO. TB woul dbe a good idea after the intake and 1.7 rockers will add some lift but sacrifice some potential revs - I never noticed though. Heads, now there's a can of worms! There are so many different ones aorund now that it's sick. Shop just did a group buy on AFRs and they were VERY nice - smooth CNC porting, love it. For a 302cube street car the GT-40 aluminum isn't bad but they've had some come in with defects so be careful. They've also had some high-end heads drop valves so inspect anything you get just in case. I'll keep an eye out for intakes and for heads - TBs are all over the place. Accufab TBs look like jewelery and I'm not exaggerating. I like my 75mm but a 70 would be fine for the street. Other than that, leave it alone (shrug). Heck, with heads and whatnot it'll be a high RPM screamer
Guest scca
intake and Tb sounds like enough for me... i do like the look of the cobra intake too if you come across one of them.. but the GT40 looks way cool compared to that -- hmm. well if someone at your friends shop has a 70 and wants to go up larger i'd take that one...
