RebekahsZ
I'm really excited to find such an easy solution. If you stumble across your part number please send it. I will order the parts but probably do the work this winter when I make droop limiters. Thank you!
RebekahsZ
Finally getting around to this since I have an autocross coming up. Just ordered 2-piece 1" shaft collar from mcmaster carr. I'll try to post pictures.
RebekahsZ
Many thanks to BrandenZ and Smyrna388Z ! I finally got around to this project and it was super easy. Bought two 1" steel shaft collars from mcmaster carr for like $18 shipped-arrived about 3 days after the internet order. Cut the plastic zip ties I had holding my steering rack billows on and pushed back the billows to expose the rack. Turned the steering wheel to the desired angle and installed the collars. Pushed the billows back over the collar and installed a new zip tie. 30 minute job once parts were on-hand. Pictures show tire rub, part numbers, step by step and final result (although picture is of opposite side). This mod is strongly advised for those running wider, larger tires than stock. Thanks, hybridz! Edited March 23, 2013 by RebekahsZ
SUNNY Z
I need to do this. Is the 280 rack the same as the 240? Thanks!
RebekahsZ
I bet it isn't enough different to matter. Order same part number and see how it goes. The part number given is for one collar, so order two.
RebekahsZ
Smyrna388Z-it was good to meet you at ZAttack. At the time, I forgot that it was you who turned me onto the collar clamps-so I missed a chance to thank you face-to-face. I installed a new (rebuilt) steering rack this weekend and swapped the collars over. I will likely be adjusting them again when I install brake ducting. Limiting steering angle as needed has really worked great and this is such a simple, clean way to do it. Additional pictures on the new rack. G-E
Wouldn't the best solution be moving the tension rod with offset rodend spacers and possibly a new mounting location on the contorl arm? Alternately, lengthening the control arm AFTER the tension rod would help too, though I understand based on the design that is a tricky proposition, but not impossible? Doesn't the reduced steering angle have unwanted side effects? How are parking lot maneuvers with it?
RebekahsZ
G-E: It's a race car. I go straight on the drag strip and you don't turn lock to lock on a road course much, although you might if you are drifting, but the Z isn't much of a drift platform. The best solution is the quick, lean, simple, cheap, EASY solution. The C-collars fit all those criteria. If I need to do a u-turn, I can bring the back around easily with a blip of the big pedal on the right.
