Guest Anonymous
Are there any differences between the older 302's (non-roller) and the newer roller 302's flywheel pattern? Meaning can I just bolt on the flywheel off my brothers ranchero 4sp thats behind the current motor and put it on his new 302 gt40 345hp motor? Or... Do I need a new flywheel with a different bolt pattern or something? Sorry to ask, but ahem, well it is a Ford and well, I just don't work on them very often. I wanna see how that little motor's gonna rip in his 64 Ranchero, should be a hoot. I'll post times as he wants to race it a bit. gene_w
I don't know if the bolt pattern is the same or not, but you can't use that flywheel on the newer motor. These motors are externally balanced, using the harmonic balancer and flywheel. The earlier 302's (pre '83?) used a 28oz offset, while the newer 302's use a 50 oz. offset. If you do use the older flywheel on the newer engine, it will vibrate like a mo'fo . Get the one that belongs with the engine and you'll be fine. 74_5.0L_Z
Gene is right about the balance differences. The old and new flywheels also have a different number of teeth on the ring gear. I just bought a new 5.0L flywheel (stock replacement). The best deal I found was at Racer Walsh ($98.00).
74_5.0L_Z
As a side note: use the starter fom a 91-93. The later starters are factory high torque mini-starters. The older (pre-90) starter are ~ 10 lbs heavier, and interfere with the block-hugger headers.
Guest Anonymous
Ditto on the 50oz. balance. My GT-40 rollor motor also came with a 157 tooth flywheel. I used the old boat anchor starter and didn't have a problem with block hugger headers. If you don't want to run the serpentine belt system, you'll have to change out your timing cover and waterpump to the older version. Well, that's what I did to my crate motor. Regards. Guest Anonymous
Thanks fella's, I knew you guys would know. We'll get a flywheel shipping then. Yeah we already bought the vibration dampener and the special aluminum water pump to use old V-belts, we're putting on his old timing cover to use the regular flow water pump. Appreciate the reply's thanks. Regards, Lone
