Guest Anonymous
Ok everyone. I just got my engine and transmission and it will be installed here in a couple of weeks. What I want to know is what driveline to use? I have the Mustang shaft and the Z shaft. Do I cut down the Mustang shaft and fit the Z rear end yoke or vise versa?? alsil
Take the yoke fromt he Mustang driveshaft and buy the JTR conversion flange for the diff and have one made at your local driveline shop. The JTR flange uses the bigger, stronger u-joints, and matches the u-joint on the Ford yoke. While you're at it, get Spicer U-joints so you don't have to worry about them. You will have to measure the distance from the face of the diff flange to the back of the tailshaft housing on the tranny so they can make it the right length. Got mine done for less that $200. Took a day. Thanks AL
Guest Anonymous
Ok Al, what you are saying is to take the Mustang yoke, buy the JTR flang and have an entire new shaft made? Is there anything wrong with using the Mustang yoke and shaft and retro fitting the Z diff flange? Mike
Guest Anonymous
Certain driveline shops and parts houses can sell you the Neapco 2-2-899-1 200R diff flange adapter for less than $35.00 to fit the 1310 spicer u joint. Driveline shortening can vary in price. Alsil got his back in one day. I agreed to pay $60.00 to get my Corvette aluminum shaft shortened to 22.5 inches for the JTR mounted GM 2004R tranny but still waiting on it. LOL, but I got visitation rights all the way thru labor. Those aluminum shafts have a paper tube inside for dampening. Waiting for the heliarc to arc
74_5.0L_Z
The datsun flange uses tiny little u-joints. I started from scratch. I went to orlando driveline specialists. New Ford slip yoke, New Neapco adapter flange, New tube, New spicer u-joints, and balanced for $190.00. Don't scrimp here. Have a new driveshaft built. alsil
Yes,t he stock Z flange is tiny. That's why JTR sells the adapter flange, so you can use bigger U-joints. This is a part of the car (like the brakes) that is never good to go with anything used. Just get the adapter from any source (there are a few) and bring the yoke, adapter, and the dimesion down to a driveline shop. The last thing you want is a bad driveshaft. Guest Anonymous
I've got a BIG problem! I have an R200 rearend with a mustang 5.0/T5 conversion. Needed a driveshaft. I had the shop bring in a N2-2-899-1 Neapco flange yoke ($52.82). 1310 and 1330 U-joints ($25 each). The Neapco part didn't fit my rearend properly - the flange fit on to the rearend and centered properly but the bolt holes didn't line up (they were too close together on the yoke). So the guy spent 2 hour modifying the flange, made it work but used one size smaller bolt to get a bolt through the hole, and then couldn't balance it because his modifications wouldn't allow him to put it on his balancer. My total bill (including removal and installation) was $591.24 Canadian and the driveshaft vibrates like crazy at 2500 rpm in 5th! Why didn't the flange fit??? Guest Anonymous
Dr Graham........ ouch that hurts.. Your differential most likely has the smaller flange with a 2.00 inch pilot and the Neapco 2-2-899-1 adapter fits the 2.25 inch flange. You need to switch the flanges on the diff and get everything in order. This is why it is important to thoroughly read the JTR manual or bring your questions to this site before the money exchanges hands. Your vibration could be the "butcher" driveline/flange job or an incorrect driveline angle between the diff and tranny.Try to get the shop make the problem right after you supply them with the correct flange. Guest Anonymous
I found a old Scarab Drive Shaft and took it down to "Drive Line Service" in San Leandro CA (510) 352-3500. They cut it back about 1.5in to work with my 5.0. DLS was the shop that did the Scarab Z drive shafts back in the 70's so they know their stuff!
