Which rear end?

I have a 71 240z. I have a 350 in the machine shop presently which should be running somewhere around 300hp when done. The stock R180 is in the car presently. I was wondering what rear end would be best for my aplication. I'm putting a t5 in the car. I'm not to worried about gas mileage.

I was thinking a R200 out of a 81-83 datsun non-turbo would be good (3.9 ratio). But I don't know much about the datsun rear ends. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How are you going to be using/driving your car?? What size/type tires, suspension setup etc, are you an agressive stoplight racer or enjoyable cruiser? If you're not looking for max power which I suspect from what you've written already going 300hp and T5 I'd recc'd keeping your r180 initially to see how you like the acceration/power of your brand new setup. If you feel it's great then find an R200 in the same or closest ratio. If you want a lot more jump to a 4.11 R200 and you'll get your max bang/buck by far. I sure wouldn't jump to a 3.9 or 4.11 until you know for sure you have the traction to use and the attitude (good or bad:-) to enjoy it. If you do want a 4.11 and can't find any (they're not overly common at all) I have them available for sale.

The suspension is all stock I beleive. I'll be using the largest tires as possible under the stock suspension with out rubbing. most likely some 225/50's. I go to the drag strip about 1 time every mounth. I do not ever shift without using the clutch (even at the drags) but I do shift as hard and fast as possible. I am a BIG stop light racer. I own a 280zx also which is to slow for my taste, but it's still fun to scoot around in.

I plan on using my 240 v8 Z for daily driving (not long distance) but I still want speed. My main goal is to at the minimum run 13's. Is this pretty easy with a v8 Z? What rpm will I be at when my Z is going 70mph with a t5 and 3.9 rear end?

thanks in advance for any advice.

@70 mph 3.90 rear, w/ 25" tire the T5 with .63 5th will run 2312 rpm, the .73 5th will run 2673 rpm. With the ultalight Zs low gears aren't a neccessity to run fast times. Traction is going to be a big issue. Lower gears will only make this worse. I wouldn't think A 13 sec. 1/4 would be hard to get with 3.55s and a mild build. If you can put the rubber down, the lower gears will obviously help your accel. times. Milage may not be a concern, but overdrive makes life a little nicer for highway cruising, and easier on the engine.
