sev0062
Ok so my transmission is in need of a rebuild and I'm confident I can do it my self. The only real issue I am having is with the lock nuts. I can get the bottom one off no problem. My question is is the main drive lock nut right or left hand thread. The transmission is not a t5 I believe its out of a 82 turbo car.
Chris Duncan
You should be able to look at the edge of the threads and tell which way they are turning. Put the middle plate in a big vice. Take a small chisel and push back the lock edge on the nut. Put the trans in 2 gears at once. (detent balls removed) to hold the shaft from turning. A large crescent wrench will work with a cheater pipe if necessary to turn the nut.

duragg
Just 1983 is reverse thread iirc It's real tight. Get the staking well removed first. I just got a brandy new Left Thread nut from Nissan, so they are still out there. Take pics as you go. Stay organized.
sev0062
Thank you again I actually broke the plate in the center with bearings in my 83 transmission because i over tightened the nut. My plan is to use the plate from the 82 tranny as a replacement for the plate I broke. Edited December 22, 2013 by sev0062
Xnke
1982+ transmissions use the left handed nut...Mostly! Check the threads to be sure which way you should be turning YOUR transmission nut.
Chris Duncan
It doesn't need to be so tight it comes close to breaking the plate. Just brake clean off all the oil and put red locktite and stake the lock tab with a rounded punch.
