Guest Anonymous
Hi, On Saturday I am picking up a 1978 280z and I had a few questions. The l28 that currently sits in the vehicle runs but the owner is telling me it spits and sputters. He told me he had a pretty major tune up done to it by the local Z guy, plugs, wires, valve adjustment.. the whole bit. Before the tune-up the car was running pretty good, but after works it aquired a hesitation and it sputters. The owner and the local Z guy examined it and noticed the the spark plugs on two of the cylinders were very dark and concluded it must be the injectors that is causing the hesitation and the dark plugs, does that make sense to you guys? If anyone of you could shoot some information my way, I'd appreciate it it. Chris
denny411
It`s possible that the valves were adjusted too tight on the two cylinders in question. causing the valves to not seat completely. OR, It could have a blown head gasket and the guys trying to blow smoke up your rectum
Guest Anonymous
From what I can tell, I don't think it's a head gasket, the valves not seating properly would make sense. How hard is it to do a valve adjustment? Chris
Guest Anonymous
A head gasket problem would show a nasty gravy goo on the oil stick or at least tiny water bubbles on top of the oil. Give it a compression check. Sounds more like the ace mechanic jagged whe he should have jigged on the valves.
Guest Anonymous
Lowball the dude, take it home, give it a decent tuneup yourself (any Haynes can walk you through it), put in a new set of NGK spark plugs, then go through and check every single electrical connection under the hood. Undo each one, clean up if you can and reattach. Bet you dollars to donuts that puppy will purr when you're done and you'll have a bargain Z. Good-running cars don't just spontaneously "break" after "tune ups" unless the tuner-upper doesn't know his a__ from a hole in the ground, which unfortunately is common with Z cars. Guest Anonymous
I appreciate the replies, the guy selling it sounds like a decent gentleman, apparently he has two other projects and he's moving so that's why he's selling it for so cheap. I really hope it's just the valves that need better adjusting and I hope I can do it myself. Thanks guys. Chris
