Guest Anonymous
I got my 78 280z today, as expected. I knew there was a problem with it and I was told it was the fuel injectors but I'm not sure. Let me explain it a bit now that I've experienced it first hand. The car starts up perfect, quick and all. It seems to idle great. When I drive it, though, it seems like I need to give it extra gas and it has a hard time revving. It doesn't stall though. 'Spit and sputter' is almost a perfect way to describe the problem. Does this sound like a fuel injector issue to you guys? The owner said that fuel injector cleaner did not work, said he tried the good stuff. Does anyone know of a good way to service the injectors? When I rev it, it almost makes like a popping sound and it sutters a bit. If you guys could shed some insight on the situation for me, I'd appreciate it. 280Zone
Before pulling the injectors I would verify adequate fuel pressure, it might be the fuel pump or the fuel pressure regulator.
Guest GreenZ
I had a 77 280Z that had that problem. Turned out the previous owner dented the bottom of the fuel tank and that damaged the fuel pickup. It was pumping air bubbles with the fuel but was building aduquate fuel pressure at the same time. The guy was so dumb he thought the engine was bad and sold me the car (great interior and orig paint) for $300!!
Guest Anonymous
Yes, but how would all of this explain the dark plugs on 2 cylinders?
denny411
I would start with a compression test. 1)Remove all spark plugs, 2)Block hold the throttle wide open, 3)Remove the air intake hose between the air flow meter an the throttle body, 4)Crank the engine through at least four compression strokes for each cylinder. Then check fuel pressure and fuel volume. If you find that either of these is low, I would recomend changing the fuel filter first. It is the cheapest and easiest, and could cause both conditions. It is also possible that the plugs or wires on cylinders in question could be at fault. Even if the plugs are new, they could have been dropped before installating which could break the resistor inside. Good luck
Guest Anonymous
One more thing, there are only 80,000 miles on the engine in this 280z, has had 2 owners and they both know each other, Arizona car. I'm the 3rd owner. I doubt it's compression but I'll check. My original theory was that 2 of the injectors were leaking causing those two cylinders to run really rich, causing the plugs to go dark. 280Zone
Yes Coyote Gary is the one, I would be surpised if he did not recommend a fix for what he found.
Guest Anonymous
He did, I just didn't realize he was as good as a mechanic that everyone says he is, my mistake for doubting his skills. He said that the injectors needed replaced, that was his fix. Chris
280Zone
My experience has been very good with him but I am sure he can make mistakes too. The screwdriver method is a good way to tell if the injectors are firing but that doesn't always mean it is the injectors it could be several other things, but that where the experience comes in, he usually starts people out with the most common problem and work through to the rarest cause to the problem. As you replace things keep the old parts so if it wasn't the problem you will have spares for the future.
Guest Anonymous
Well, I guess the general consesus is that it's the fuel injectors so I ordered a new set with new connectors for 75 bucks. Are fuel injectors hard to replace on an l28? I can't wait till I start daily driving this 280z. Chris
Guest Anonymous
The guy I bought it from said he had one of the better mechanics from the Desert Z Association check it out, I guess he goes by the name 'Coyote' or something. He said he the mechanic put a screw driver up to the injectors and put his ear to the end of the the screw driver and heard the injectors missing. Does that sound right to you?
