tmarino304
I bought the motor and put carb on and started the motor. It ran pretty good. Shut off and hooked up radiator hose and filled with water. Tried to start engine and it would barley turn over and wouldn't start. Confused, I pulled spark plug #1 and water came pouring out. So pulled the rest of the plugs and water was in #1,#2,#3,#5,#7. So I began to take intake manifold off and work my way to head gasket. When I found that there was no intake manifold gasket installed was pissed but relieved that that was a pretty easy fix. I installed a new gasket and put back together. Started motor with cooling system all hooked up but didn't add water. Took radiator cap off and engine idle increased. I put hand over radiator hole and engine slowed rpm and it was sucking extremely hard and increased when I increased rpm's. Like my engine was using cooling system as an air intake? So replaced head gasket, all other gaskets & it is still doing it. The motor has zero miles on it and was properly broke in. I'm so lost with idea's and have no idea what or why or how this is happening. Please please someone help????????
dexter72
Hmmm, What manifold are you using for starters???.... If the engine is knocking you may have bent a rod, especially if the engine hydro locked. Coolant cannot be compressed so another part has to bend/break usually rods. My first thoughts are did you install the intake gaskets correctly??... Does the intake manifold have a crack in it??.. Are the headgaskets on correctly??.. Did you install rubber/cork gaskets at the front and back of the intake manifold?? Or did you use sealant in those two spots??... Have you checked the heads and block for warpage at anytime before putting the engine together??... Were the heads ever milled ??.... Just some thoughts Edited October 11, 2014 by dexter72
Domzs
Might have a mismatched intake manifold or gaskets to cylinder heads . Need more information on your engine and manifold combo .
jt1
Try pressurizing the cooling system with air and see if you can find the leak. It sounds like the intake could be warped, or it may have had some milling done in the past. Were the head dowels in place on the block? jt
240z72
Sounds like intake manifold/intake manifold gasket. If your only getting vaccum and no pressure in the system. Headgaskets should not be an issue. Please follow up with results. A side note. Dose it have vortec heads? (Center bolt valve covers) As they requires a special intake manifold over your, I guess old school SBC.
