Guest ZDreamin
hey all just wondering your thoughts on me putting a good n47 head onto an 82zx motor that has 120k on it, i currently have a running 76 and have the oportunity to buy the 82zx motor and would just save it as a spare, but i really dont want to rebuild it cause i dont have the money, so my question is would it be very stupid of me to put my n47 head on this motor as is or should i do some stuff to freshen up the motor??? again money is an issue thanks all forgive me for being a poor kid!!! thanks sean
Mudge
If the bores check out, you wont need to re-bore it. There is a good chance a cleanup of the walls with a glaze breaker, and new rings/bearings/seals will be "just as good" as a real rebuild. I never added up all the parts but if you do it yourself and have the tools, I'd say ~$500. A fair number of people thrash on junk yard blocks just fine though, so if you think its fine, the walls look good, you can crack the oil pan and look at the bearings - if looks good, do with it what you will. Ultimately 120k is not that much if the engine was cared for and it hasn't been sitting for years and years.
tec280zx
120k? thats right around the sweet spot for an L series motor..LOL provided it hasen't been too trashed. I have about 10:1 compression on my motor with 235k. No probs yet...
DAW
Run a compression test on the 280ZX motor (preferably hot). If it's fairly even and within spec across the board, then there's no problem. I agree with the others above, 120K is nothing for a Nissan L6 if it's been maintained. DAW
Guest 280steveX
i have an '83 ZX & the chance to buy a N47 head. i went to shop for an inspection & turns out the owner is into Zs. he said the N47 would make the motor run hot if anything. but the '82-3 heads were his fave, becuz he swapped a hot cam & everybody else thought he rebuilt the motor. anybody else experience overheating? ZDreamin, hav you finished this swap yet?
Guest Zachieved
not yet, its kinda like this i bought the car almost a year ago, and it had a "spun rod bearing" so i was screwed still revved high but would die a lot. so i thought maybe the guy was right and it had a blown motor, so i needed a fix unfortunately all i could find was a motor that had been sitting on the side of some guys house uncovered for like 2 years in alifornia...so i made the trip 50 bucks in gas, 80 bucks for the motor. needless to say i dropped the motor in as is basically, didnt touch the head but got the valves adjusted and it works fine its a 75 or 76 motor. but i came accross this 120k mile motor for cheap totally complete so its in my garage and then the old n47 headed block is in back so i havent quite made this motor dont know if i will, this 80 dollar crap motor has some pep let me tell. so i was just throwing it out there to see what i could do, my parents dont like all these motors everywere tho. sean
