Well i finished these up here they are

Intel P III 500mhz

5 gig 5700rpm IDE harddrive (for mp3s)

1 gig 7000rpm secondary IDE HD (for TEC-II controls)

Clarion 7" wide screen fully motorized in dash LCD with TV tuner and touch screen

wireless keyboard

intergrated trackball

I will be cutting out the storage doors behind the seats and placing the computer in there with 2 4" electric fans with wire mesh over them. once i get my digital camera i will be showing pics I think this will be awesome.

Also the car will have no heater (i live in arizona) so i will utilize the center piece making a custom holder for the LCD screen.

My goal is to be able to listen to mp3's in the car and be able to fiddle with my boost, fuel curve and ignition in real time from the touch screen LCD..... the only word that comes to mind is 'money'

Wow, thats a pretty big project, that sounds really cool. No need for a laptop to control that fuel injection either.. icon_smile.gif Are the drives going to be ok getting bounced around though that was my only thought (outside of 'Money' icon_smile.gif ). Good luck Man, sounds neat.

Regards,

Lone

well there a plenty of modifications to fit an extra battery, and a computer into the small storage spaces, so i decided to cut and weld heh so now there is a small box like structure (the hump is still there for the diff and driveshaft) ironically mp3car.com has great tech for this stuff and i will be putting the harddrives in a plexiglass structure (rectangular) with the 2 fans inside , the IDE controller/motherboard video card/sound card will be placed in a seperate box with seperate fans. As lone described keeping the drives from shaking and such will be a different task... something to keep them secured but does not promote heat insulation... the power supply will be wired to the alternator directly then a solienoid will be linked to the battery so the computer will be running all day....techniqually, but i will have a relay button that actives the 'sleep' mode so it will shut down the hard disks and LCD screen while im not in the car. With a little wobble of the trackball or press of the keyboard and the computer should start up again in win98. Since i have shaved the door locks/hatch lock/marker lights/pillar emblems/and all other emblems i will be connecting a relay to visual show the status of locks hehe. Im also considering of digitally showing exhaust temp, fuel, boost and various other features that i might intergrate...it will be fun...i hoping.... the touch screen will also be nice for me because i wont have access to the trackball while im driving so i can configure boost/rev limiter and such in real time will a press of my finger hahaha

hey man, you are doing the same thing i plan on doing but i found a computer system that i think you might like icon_smile.gif go to

autonav and check out the sport boat pc.

the things i like are

1. 12VDC input with a built in UPS and also a input filter.

2. 266 MHz chip (not a whole lot but more than enough to play MP3's and tune the efi on the fly icon_biggrin.gif ),64 meg ram, 6.1 gig shock mounted hard drive, integrated video and graphics card, and a built in 24X cd rom.

3. 2"H X 7"W X 7"D is all it measures in at (hell you could mount this straight into the dash since it about the same size as a cd player!) only weighs 2.2 lbs. and has a 6.5" touchscreen TFT display (it has the ability to do dual video out so you can even have two screens! one for the tweakin and the other for the tunes)

4. intergrated 12 channel GPS system, oh and the audio is 32 bit with RCA outs so you can hook it straight to amp with with minimal fuss icon_biggrin.gif

5. last but not least this thing is totally corrosion resistant and sealed against moisture icon_biggrin.gif so having it in the harsh conditions of a ****pit is no problem, it also comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse

not to mention some other nice features. check it out and tell me what you think

What are you guys using for power supplies? DC-DC converters? POwer inverter? or do your motherboards work with 12v??

My in-car computer is a K6-2 380 with 128m and a laptop drive (currently 1g but if I can keep it from crashing I will upgrade to something large). It has 4 serial ports so I will be interfacing it to the car's efi computer. The motherboard also has a compactflash slot, so I could potentially use an IBM microdrive for the operating system and just use MP3 cd's for music storage, but that's not ideal. I have a 6" TFT Sharp LCD screen for it (bought from eio.com I think for $100). Other features are 1 PCI slot, onboard audio, pc104 expansion, usb, onboard video, tv out, tv IN icon_smile.gif, onboard ide controller, etc etc etc.

Definately interested to hear what you're using for power.

all intel based motherboards use 12v,5v,-12v and -5v. Now as to get a 12-14V power source to work, I think it would be best to find a DC power supply. I think some laptops use them, but I wouldn't know where to find them. I don't think a power converter will give enough juice to power all that, unless you go for one of the big ones and space and price become an issue.

You are on track with TimZ and myself. We are colaborating on a control system for the tech and have been floating the idea around for several months. However, our main goal is the integration of wideband technology for use with the Tech. Now, if Tim would just get off his....Whoops! Sorry Tim! HEHE!

the computer system i told you guys about is built to be direrctly installed into the current electrical system with minimal fussing. it has it's own built in 12V DC power supply with a line filter. all you need is a good constant "hot" wire and a good ground to get this puppy running.
