RedDevilRacer 280z Lt1/T56 Swap

Recommended Posts

So i have been lurking on this site for a couple months now and before i begin my log i want to say thanks to the members of this forum. When i first got my Z i consulted this forum a lot for assistance on getting my Z running. The wealth of knowledge on this site alone is vast and helpful. Now with that aside names Andrew and i wanted to start my humble build log today. My 1978 Datsun 280z has been a joy and learning curve to own and drive. However i knew from the beginning i would eventually go down the swap engine road. At the time i didnt have my mind made up on what engine to go with however more and more i was leaning towards the Chevy V8 family, and as luck would have it i was getting a tire replaced five minutes away from my house and found a abandoned z28 camaro convertible(Lt1/T56) that the shop owner sold to me for $1k (runs, and drives). I took delivery of the car yesterday and decided it was time to get back on the ball with my Z.

Currently my Z is being dissembled for floor replacement and bracing. Found that the previous owner didn't do a great job at repairing this wonderful ride. So less talk more pics. Also if anyone would like to chime in on do's and dont's for me during this swap please do id really appreciate it...

More pics and updates to come...

Thanks Julian yeah this will be good fun with us both building our Z's at the same time.

*Small update for the thread replaced the starter and block ground wires, fluids as well on the Camaro and she fired right up. Drives great and shifts smooth. So that's a big relief not bad for $1k. Now at the stage of removing sound deadening and prepping the floors to be replaced.

*Update*

First let me apologize for the lack of updates, i recently accepted a new position in Maui and have been preparing myself and my family for this move.

With that said let me catch everyone up on the Z (will get pics added here soon as well). After completely stripping the Z down to its bare chassis i have removed most of the cancer from her int he engine bay area. Dash is getting repaired as well. Bushings and brakes are being replaced.

Plan ahead is to get the engine in place, i will be doing the wiring for this swap ( if anyone out there has any insight or advice on this please feel free to share).

As much as i hate to say this my intentions for now is to get the car running so it can be shipped to Maui. Once i receive her in Maui i will continue the build on her. If anyone has any tips or advice for me that could help me in this matter please share. Also i am interested in seeing some of your exhaust setups as i plan to weld my own exhaust up as well.
