Still wondering

I don't mean to be a pest, but a new gas tank is the only thing keeping my Z from being drivable right now. So, if anyone can clue me in on what i need to be looking for to replace my gas tank on my '76 Z, I'd appreciate it. As I said in an earlier post, any replacement tanks we've looked at will not fit b/c the hump on the top of the tank is shorter and wider than the orrigional. Did they make changes mid year or something? Thanks in advance for any info you can offer.

Sincerely,

Despretly Seeking Gas Tank

Neil, could you give us the details once again? You have to buy a new tank, but you are finding that none of them fit?? '76 280Z's should have similar gas tanks to the others. Is it possible for you to get out to a Nissan wrecking yard and compare tanks there?

Hope you find a reasonable solution soon!!

You have a '76 right? I swapped a tank from a '76 into my '73 so all those years should fit. One thing though, the older tanks won't have the baffles for the EFI pickups in the tank. You could always get them welded in but...keep looking icon_smile.gif

75 & 76 are the same.somewhere in 77 nissan changed the rear floor and used a bigger tank.i have a 77 car and a 76 parts car and have niticed big difference in rear floor.77 tank is bigger but wont fit in early cars i think.owen has the 76 tank.do not weld on gas tanks unless rinsed many times and filled with water or c02.or if you are going to sue me for this advice just dont weld on gas tanks.75 or 76 tanks are great because the hose out is large-11 mm .plus a return line and baffles.if you are on east coast you should buy z parts in ca-they have pick&pulls where they just about give the stuff away if you are willing to get dirty.

All tanks are not created equal! I know for a fact that Nissan changed the hatch area design, and thus the fuel tank, between model years 76 and 77. The 77 was the first year to use "hatch risers", for lack of a better term. The risers were used to create a false floor in the 77. The floor was made of fiberboard and gave an extra 3 inches or so of clearance for the jack, spare, etc. This was needed because the tank was made larger and thus the depth of the spare tire well was reduced.

I am not sure what tank changes were made among all other years. I do know that the 74 260 I bought has a much smaller tank than the 77s that I have torn down. The 77 tanks are basically big cylinders stretching along the entire width of the car. The 74 stores most of the fuel on the right side of the car and the tank looks like an "L" rotated counter-clockwise 90 degrees.

In light of all this, I have decided to lose the spare, that I once though so valuable, and go with a fuel cell. It just makes sense for me as the car will NOT be a daily driver.

Now that was a lot of wind for very little content icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks fella's. The info was very helpfull. I talked to the shop today and they had asked for a tank for a 280 Z, not a '76 specifically. Sounds like they sent a 77 or 78 tank. Good news, though. They found a guy with a '76 tank he's willing to part with. Should have it on this week. Then "vrooom"! icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks again. I'll keep you guys posted.
