tec280zx
Can anyone explain to me how ignition timing can effect gas mileage? For example, would you get better results with the timing a little retarded or more advanced. BTw, I have an 81zx. Thanks.
Guest greimann
Advancing timing usually improves power and mileage. Be careful not to go too far and cause detonation that will hurt power and mileage.
tec280zx
Greimann: Thanks for the info, I thought that as a general rule of thumb anything that makes more power usually decreases gas mileage. BTW, awesome car you got there!!
Guest greimann
Actually modifying a motor for more power usually means making it more efficient. Low restriction exhaust, and intake are two good example of modifications that will increase gas mileage provided you stay out of the throttle, (but that is usually not the point of engine modifications). Advancing timing is another free power and mileage trick, but it I believe it increses NOX emissions, so there is never a free lunch. Mudge
The more vacuum the engine makes, the more efficient, and generally power its making. Timing will greatly affect your vacuum, which on an FI engine you can generally look at your MAP pressure to figure this stuff out. So, a vacuum gauge is proven yet again to be a great all around tuning and troubleshootin tool
