Guest greimann
Stock Camaros in '78 put out a wimpy 170 HP with sickly 8.5:1 compression ratio. If you do get an engine from a salvage yard, you would not directly install it into a car without rebuilding it first, so while you have it open, install some flat top pistons, a mild cam, intake manifold and Holley carb and bingo you have an easy 300 HP. All of these modifications can be purchased with C.A.R.B. certification. If you want to go further, get some aftermarket aluminum heads and have 330+ HP. This motor will be a very nice daily driver with enough power to take on any Mustang you come across.
Guest Anonymous
According to Vizard, taking out the (very) restrictive cats and exhaust, not to mention the smog pump, and using the corvette exhaust manifolds brings the '77 Camaro engine up to 225-230bhp. Up the compression a bit, and add a cam and an intake in there and you're easily in the 300s...
fl327
check for leaks, run a compression check, check for damage in general, re ring it, re do the head gasket, and stick a blower on top of it, and that 8.5 compression puts you in sick sick blower range, with more hp and torque for the same amount that it would cost you to make it NA and quick. run 10psi baby, run em hard. fl327
oops, didnt read the smog part, ok, do all of the above before i said blower, get it to pass, which should be real easy, go home, and bolt the blower on, youll have around 400lbs of torque under your foot from around idle (thats with a baby charger) and youll be having zo6s and just about anyone else begging for mercy. thats the cheapest and most power i can see, with all the motorwork youll be in just the same to pump it up na that a super charger would, and not see the same results. Guest Anonymous
Len, a blower isn't the most cost effective power adder, that would be NOS. The blower itself is pretty expensive, then you have to add an intercooler (if you're gonna run 10psi), not to mention upgrade your carb and fuel system to handle the demands of the motor (big $$) Then you'd also need to beef up your bottom end, with forged rods and pistons etc, and cut a hole in your hood. Bottom line is you can do 300 even 400bhp for pretty cheaply, but once you go over that, things start adding up pricewise
