Guest Tom Scala
I finally finished the turbo swap in my 78 today. Well, it's done as far as being driveable anyway as I'll be adding upgrades as I go along. Thanks to everyone on the site who has helped me directly(Scottie) and indirectly through your posts. Couldn't have done it without you guys. The SDS still needs fine tuned but the car runs really well for the limited amount of time I've spent on it so far. Here is a rundown of my setup and where I want to take it in the future: -Original 78 n/a block w/70K miles -P90A with God knows how many miles -87' Buick GN compressor/T3 exhaust w/a clipped wheel. -Scottie downpipe spliced into a 2.5" Motorsport mandrel bent turbo exhaust w/Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. -60mm throttle body with 1st gen Talon BOV mounted on the stock TB inlet pipe. -1975 Mercedes 450SEL injectors (420cc?) I don't know if these injectors are actually 420cc like I've heard or possibly more since I've had to lower my RPM Fuel Value numbers on the SDS to keep it from running & idling very rich. I've got a 82 turbo engine tore down that I'm rebuilding,a nice Spearco IC for later on, and a 3" exhaust with an Ultra Flow will replace the current one but for now I'm going to play with this setup and try to get it tuned as best I can. If it doesn't rain Friday I'm going to Quaker City Dragway and get some baseline numbers with this low boost(8 psi max) setup.
Drax240z
Great news Tom! I hope to be writing a similar post really soon myself. How did you find the SDS install? I am about 1/2 way through the install. Have any troubles getting it started up? Looking forwards to hearing what you get at the track for a baseline. Scottie-GNZ
Great news Tom. Remember, you will not get it perfect overnight, so take small steps. Verify those injectors as the SDS fuel map is is built off a base number derived from engine displacement and injector flow.
Z-Gad
Excellent Tom!! I hope to be writing a similar post as well in the near future. I'm having the headwork done now and then i'll be putting things together. I'm a little nervous about the SDS install, but i guess it is just a matter of just doing it when the time comes. Do you have any 'words of wisdom'?
Guest Tom Scala
Wow, someone asking me for words of wisdom. Whats this world coming to? All I can do is echo Scottie and tell you to take it slow and read and reread the sds webpage. I seem to have the full throttle mixture set up slightly rich which is ok but my off boost cruise mixture is still a bit rich. I'm going to play with the manifold pressure values in this range and see if I can improve on that. I notice if I lean the mixture knob about 10% at cruise the mixture comes around nicely and the car feels a little better but it's not running bad at all where it's at. The installation itself was not nearly as hard as turning the key for the first time. Seriously,I was REALLY nervous and sweating it out sitting in that drivers seat. I had my fire extinguisher in my left hand half expecting the whole damn thing to blow, but other than some rich running initially there were no dramatics. I'd have to say it really is simple to use and a lot easier than pulling the float bowls off a Holley every time you want to change the jets. Good luck guys. BLKMGK
Hrm, I'd love to hear from some other folks running this setup - especially on a V8. I'm used to the bells and whistles of a DFI type setup but this one's simplicity may hold some real value. Is the tuning granular enough for you to get good power without hurting things in other areas? Their WEB site certainly diplays some impressive vehicles using their setups...
