Im taking bets - Whats the problem???

Well, I just got back from a nice drive, with extended time spent in the 4-5,000 range in 3rd gear on rough roads. Well, I heated the car up pretty good, and it would not idle, about 220, 230 degrees, so I let it sit for half an hour before firing it back up. Reluctantly it fired back up (heat soaked starter). Well it seemed to run ok, but there was an odd click I noticed when the revs got into the threes. THe rest of the ride was downhill low load, but I noticed the engine overheating again, so I took it outta gear, coasted and the temp went right to where it should. Once I got to level ground, I started to accelerate and noticed the now nocking sound coming from I expect the valve train whenever I went above 2500. And whenever the revs were above idle the temp would climb (this config has never had this problem).

Now, Im taking bets. Whats the problem. hehehe

Im guessing bent exhaust valve or two.

Ive got some more info, I popped that valve covers and dont see any problems, no broken lifters or really bent pushrods. I drove it again once it cooled down and the noise is there lightly in neutral, very strong (and scary metal clunking) under load above 2000 rpms, but non existant below that, no matter the load.

So second guess, spun rod bearing (didnt want to hear that). hehhee

Matt, Bummer. Knocks are never good,...unless its publisher's clearinghouse with a million dollar check. Sorry to hear the news. Had an elusive one once, my cam walked forward and a lobe contacted the block, ouch! Had to remachine/bearing/ring everything. Good luck!
