Guest Anonymous
Howdy folks! After slapping a L28 and the usual upgrades to that into my 240z, I just wasn't up to snuff as much as I wanted. I ran a 5.7 0-60, and a 13.9 in the quarter, not the numbers that I'm looking for, but better than stock. So, I was over at my brothers house the other day..and I spotted a crankshaft out in his barn. Since I've always dinked with nissans and the like in my life, I can identify a V8 crank as a V8 crank when I see it, so that's as far as I got. He nabbed it at the last machine shop he worked as, as the boss refused to pay him, so he grabbed this crank, as his payment. The journals have been ground ten thousands, and it will need another ten thousands, as it has rusted...but it is a steel 327 crank. He is offering to sell it to me for $200, is this a decent buy? I've always wanted to put a 327 in my 240, and this would make a great build start for my V8 Z, correct? thanks!
DavyZ
After it had been ground again, it might be worth it. Personally, I would not pay more than $100. Why? Glad you asked! I would rather get a Scat crank made of cast steel (9000 material) for pennies more than $200. Shoot, it's new and knife edged, so why bother spending hard money on a used crank that still needs work? This is totally my opinion, and yes I do know that the crank in question is a steel forged crank, but that is not enough to deter me from paying less or buying a new Scat crank. grumpyvette
$200 for an old rusted crank that needs to be turned, polished and reballanced if it passes a magnaflux test for no cracks is out rite robbery!!!!!!!and at this point your not even possitive its forged not cast!!!! by the time you get it ground, polished, magnafluxed, ballanced, ETC youll have another $250-$350 in it , do yourself a big favor and buy a 3.75" stroke forged NEW CRANK and build a 383 which will leave any 327 useing the same parts like heads and cam in the dust!! look here, http://www.scatcrankshafts.com/stdknifesmblkchevy.html or better yet a complete matched rotateing assembly like this, 1-383FHPS-LR 4340 Forged Crank, 350 Main, 3.750" Stroke, 6.000" Forged H Beam Rods and 4.030" Bore SRP Forged Pistons (THIS KIT WILL INTERNAL BALANCE WITH NO MALLORY METAL) here; http://www.scatcrankshafts.com/smblkchevyrotating.html
