Guest Lee Smith
The JTR swap is for Zs to 78. What is different on 79--83Zs ? They are both st. 6s Lee

Guest Lee Smith
I have a carb moter. Mainly interested in mounts, drive shaft & wirying for a bare bone set up. No show car, just one that will GOOO Lee
Guest greimann
The style of mounts on a '79 - '83 conversion depends on whether you have the steering box or rack and pinion. If you have the steering box, the engine can sit lower because it doesn't have to clear the rack, just the crossrod. If you have the rack, the mounts have be taller to provide clearance. The wiring and drivetrain are about the same as a 1st gen conversion. Here are a few pix of a converted '79. http://zdriver.com/rides/detailride.php?cat=2&relIdx=2&vehId=
Guest Anonymous
Davy is right, the chassis was different. I've read here I believe that there isn't any room to set the engine back like in the first gen, so the mounts end up really being nothing more than spacers between the datsun motor mount horns that stick up ( techie name eh? ) off the cross memeber and the stock chevy motor mounts. Doing a search under ZX swap will probably net you the dimensions, or some insight anyway on whats required. Regards, Lone
fl327
i like the zx swap alot, wish i could get it past smog. a carb motor would be cool, i think you have to take power away from in tank pump and run a mechanical? the mounts look really simple, just spacers on the stock datsun mounting horns and it will drop right in, the trans crossmember just takes a little help and its in, get a friend and some beer and you can rock it out quickstyle. Modern Motorsports Ltd
Lee, lots of info on this already in the forums 'search' function top right will yield lots. In short, JTR mostly applies but you have zero setback on a 280ZX as the firewall to crossmember is 3" less in length/distance. It still yields great weight distribution like a Z, just a different front geometry. Dave (howdy Dave! was wonder how you been!) pointed out some steering influences on your motor location. A tweaked oilpan can help in that area as well. Dave, how're you and your Z doing? (Dave gave me LOTS of help years back) Mines progressed a lot since we last talked some 5 or more years back. 'state of the ZX' last August.
DavyZ
Lee, The '79-'83 ZX's have a different chassis than the 1st gen cars ('70-78) do. So, the JTR setup does not really apply. Motorsport Auto does sell a kit for mounting a Chevy V8 into the 280ZX cars. Greimann and Ross Corrigan both have sweet ZX cars with V8's. I wouldn't mind having one for daily driver! Comfy, roomier, quieter, it would be a winner. Davy
