Guest 2002sentraSER
i was putting the 240 carbs, manifold and likage on the 260 engine and after i was all done the engine woould not turn all the way over what should i do?
DAW
The SUs don't have accelerator pumps, so if the chokes aren't set right starting can be difficult. Try (careful!) ether (starting fluid) to see if it will fire. Since you didn't need to disturb the ignition system, it should spark like it did when parked for the carb swap. If it fires on ether but won't keep running, then start tracing back the fuel supply to each carb, i.e., fuel pump/lines flow, float chambers, the fine mesh screens at the inlet-needle-seat, etc. Check that the pistons in the carbs lift OK using one finger, and drop when released. Lockjaw
I will tell you what helps to get one started. The adusting knob on the bottom of the carbs that asjustes the level of the orifice should be 2.5 turns from all the way up. In other words, turn the things in all the way, and then open them 2.5 turns. You need a choke to start Su's. I am using two pieces of solid core wire right now since I have my car all in peices. Also make sure you plugs aren't fouled out. I had a hard time starting mine the other day after I put the a head on it, and the plugs were wet. Cleaned em and it fired right off. Good luck. Guest 2002sentraSER
if it gets to the point where it wats to start but won't turn over what should i do if the stuff does not work that you sujested please advise
Lockjaw
Ok, not turning over to me means when you turn the key, nothing happens. Like if your battery was dead. So does the engine turn over but won't start, or does it not turn over at all? I would make sure the engine is getting spark by pulling the high tension lead from the coil out of the distributor, and see if you get spark when you turn the engine over. Position the end close to some piece of metal and see if you see a spark. If you do, then you need to test a spark plug wire and make sure the spark is getting to the plug. If it is getting gas and has spark, it should start unless you hooked something up wrong during the swap process.
DAW
Turning over generally refers to cranking (starter turning the crank). It sounds like maybe your car fires but won't run. If this is the case, make sure all coil primary wiring is intact because if you have a ballast resistor, it is bypassed while cranking, then used for running mode. Check the voltage at the pos side of the coil while cranking, and then while ign switch is "on". Maybe the ign switch or wiring is at fault and it fires but won't run. Guest 2002sentraSER
it is starting but won't turn over to run just verberates like it is missing something to fully run if that helps at all
Guest 2002sentraSER
when i did the swap some wires were conected still to the 260 linkage so i ending up useing the 260 linkage with the 240 carbs and manifold is that why my engine won't start because i traced back all the wires the coil and there was no spark coming out of the coil so i bought a new coil and that did not do anything so now i don't know what to do please help me i just want to get it to run
Lockjaw
Did you swap anything distributor related. Make sure the distributor is connected to the harness if it is stock. You should also check the ballast resistor and a coil with a test light and make sure they are getting power. I have that problem with mine from time to time. I put a 240 distributor in it the other day and it would not spark, put the 260 distributor back in and it fired right up. I( haven't gotten to the bottom of that yet. Also, make sure you did not reverse the wires to connect the coil when you replaced it. A test light would be a wise cheap investment for you. Start checking and seeing where you do and don't have power.
Guest 2002sentraSER
i did not swap out the distributer but i bought a test light and tested the 3 wires that go from the harness to these three point things and then there to the coil and all three of those wires all gave a light is that bad or good i think it might not be good but i am not sure what to do with it because i bought a new coil and a new battery and that did not do anything please help
Lockjaw
Have you checked to make sure the coil is not wired up backwards? Other than that, you should be getting spark. You may need to get a factory manual and start testing the ingition circuit.
Guest 2002sentraSER
i checked that and i even tried to bypass the resister by hooking the coil directly to the battery and that did not do anything but it did sound like it made it try harder what should i try next
