--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I meet this guy today, nice guy, and doesn't know to much about his Z.

Here's the problem: He replace almost everything in this engine compartment including head, distributor, points, timing chain, etc... and this car runs strong from time to time. Once and a while the car would begin to spudder and would not have power and the tach start to act erratic. Said that when it does this the tach doesn't read the right rpms.Example: He had it at about 4000 rpms on the highway but it only read 1000 and bounced up and down. And sometimes when it happened it would not start. He also keeps replacing the condensor on from the distributor.(is there a way to check for a bad condensor by the color of the spark it give off when you disconnect it and run a spark test?)

He talked to a Nissan Tech and the tech said it could be a bad ground. From the speedo or tach.

So what could the problem be? If he can't fix it he was asking if I would buy it from him, but he really likes the car, but doesn't have much time and money to adress the problem.

Sorry for it being long and I hank you all for your help

So he has a older Z? a 240? if so i guessing he has a points system...

ok i would start by first wiping clean the distributor cam and reapplying grease to the points use di-electric grease (spark plug boot grease or battry terminal grease).....

make sure the points are in good shape.. if not make sure to get a good feeler guage and file set... the files are only 99cents? and the feelers are about 3 bucks... file down the points and reinstall them..if they are almost all gone replace them.. gap them to .5 mm against a ridge on the cam..

should run good after that... oh also make sure you are getting 6volts at the coil.. if you are gettin higher than this you are burning points..

if it still runs bad.. check for corrosion on all the ignition connections... (ground to distributor, connectors to coil, condenser)

basically it sounds like he has points problems... sucks he did all that work when a new set of points are only 5 bucks...

ohh.. does he have a dual point system or a single?

bang847 thanks for the help i'll ask him about that on monday, he went out of town.

He said that he already replaced the points, so could it be a gap problem between the points and the ridge on the cam

Don't discount the Nissan tech with the ground being a problem. I couldn't believe the difference a simple ground wire from my block to the chassis made. My gauges would swing back and forth and twitch, one ground wire later, all sit perfectly stable and work as they should. Its important. On the other hand it might just be a bad tach. I wish him luck with it, electrical problems suck.

On it running bad during this time, is his charging system putting out anything, I mean he's not running off his battery only? Another thing, what about the fuel system? I've read numerous stories of either splits in the pickup tube or things of that nature doing some really weird things. Just a few things to check off the top of my head, perhaps none of it relevent, but things to check none the less. :D

Regards,

Lone
