fuses are frying because either there is a short in the wiring harness, (wire got pinched or just knicked from years of rubbing) or contacts are corroded and causing excessive current draw.

pull the lamps, are the fuses still cooking? if so gotta trace the wiring.

not cooking then probly the bad contacts somewhere. remember these switches/sockets are OLD! dunno the year but most of us here are dealing with cars close to 30years old.

bad contacts creates resistance which pulls the voltage down which increases current demands.

look at it this way:

P(measured in watts)= voltage(volts) x current (amperes)

to simplify lets take a 10watt light bulb in a 12v system. to calculate the current req.:

divide 10 / 12 = 0.833333... current measured in amps.

again to simplify cut the voltage down to 5 volts and solve

divide 10 / 5 = 2amps

figure in the load of multiple lamps, contacts, wire size and length and you get into trouble pretty fast.

as for headlights put relays on and you can run modern lights on your ride. just get good relays, wire that have the current capacity to handle the load.

headlights probly switch contacts. once figured out you can get the painless 2headlight relay conversion kit. #764-30815 from jegs. ithink thats the number.

probly some cheaper relays out there but painless uses pretty good quality parts.

good luck,

kent
