Guest 327zxer
I just picked up a chevy 327 small block engine
Z-TARD
Sounds pretty good. It should be a large journal diameter too since its out of a 69. I've been looking for one of those out here for a while, to remove the crank and put it in my 4 bolt 010 block. So far all I can find is the pre 69 engines with small journal cranks. For what its worth, I think the 327 is probably one of the best bore/stroke combinations for a light car like the Z. Good luck with your swap. Guest 327zxer
Why should I use that kit anyways. Is there something wrong with the MSA stuff. I just really need the mounts right now.
Guest Anonymous
Just get the JTR book and read it before you do anything else. If you need the book email me, I have a spare one I'll let go for $18 shipped. If you can make the mounts yourself the diagrams are in the book. The book will also show you the benefits of the JTR method. Lots of good info in there. Tom
DavyZ
Why should I use that kit anyways. Is there something wrong with the MSA stuff. I just really need the mounts right now. BECAUSE YOU CAN SAVE MONEY DOING IT YOURSELF AND LEARN SOMETHING, THAT'S WHY! Don't let your excitement cloud your thinking; what he just gave you was good advice. Truly, the mounts can be fabbed for next to nothing and you can put money elsewhere. Plus, the JTR setback plates can get that engine back almost against the firewall so your ultra-short tranny will not have the stickshift coming out of the dashboard. Just some thoughts. JTR pretty much started it all and everything else is pretty much a knockoff of their idea with a flair to it... I always stay stick to the original its always the best. and business is the primary follower of darwinism only the strong survive. and the weak cannibalize themselves for the strongs benefit. Guest 327zxer
Thanks guys for the advice and insight. I think we are going to find either a 4 speed or a 5 speed tranny instead and I showed my dad the jci conversion kit and he sayed it looked pretty good so now we are probably going to use that conversion kit instead. What do you guys think now.

Use a T56 if you look hard enough you can find emf or a good price and its a 6 speed AND if you use a LT1 you can just get the transmission from teh same car AND JTR provides conversion mounts for the T56 too
Guest 327zxer
I already have a engine and it is out of a 1965 chevelle not an Lt-1. ARE the JTR and JCI kits the same or not just a question.
DavyZ
They are completely different. Here is the link for JTR: http://www.jagsthatrun.com They position the engine and tranny for best weight distribution, lowest and back furthest. The JTR book is very well thought out and made for the guy who likes to be given the option of either buying the parts or making simple parts himself. Use the search function to find the very long and sometimes heated arguments about what kit is 'best' for the V8 conversion. If you have not done proper research about this topic and the pitfalls of doing a V8 conversion, you may end up making decisions and doing things that you regret. The whole purpose of this forum was to help guys doing V8 conversions in their Z cars; the info is there-go get it and good luck!!! That said, there is a MSA kit for sale on ebay right now (for what it is worth, I would go MSA before JCI, and JTR before anything else in that order) http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2403429666 Davy
Guest 327zxer
I would get the JTR book but that stuff is just for the 70-78 z's and I have a 1983 280zx turbo 2+2. One question though would the motor mounts and the tranny mounts be the same on both cars. If thats the case then I will get the JTR book. Brad-ManQ45
You pretty much only need spacers for the 280zx conversion - no setback plate needed/able to be used. (less distance from firewall to crossmember).
Guest 327zxer
so I wouldn't need the setback plates then.
DavyZ
Uuuuuuugh. I totally missed it someplace in this thread that you had a ZX not a Z. MSA is cool for the parts, but that kit I showed you earlier will NOT work for a ZX. JTR does not apply to the ZX at all really, but the book is helpful for swaps in general. Greimann and Ross C. are two guys on this board that have V8 ZX's. I believe that they 'easily' fabricated the spacers/mounts for their V8's, although a kit is available from MSA. Sorry for the confusion. Davy
