Bay Area Junk Yard to Pull Chevy Engine?

Hi,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Ah the cliche...

Anyhoo, I am about to begin my own conversion. I would like to get my

hands on a Chevy 350 to begin. As cost is an issue, I have decided to go

to a junkyard and get myself a dog. However, I have just relocated to the

US from the Emerald Isle and don't know where the yards are. I live in

SF in Sunset. I have a nice big garage which is ridiculously empty.

One other thing, I have never pulled an engine before, so advice and tips

would be handy!

Thanks

Colm

Welcome to the board! (formally speaking)

I work in the Sunset District at 33rd and Vicente BTW--come by for a chat and some coffee (Len168 knows I'm good for that!).

Anyway, I have not seen too many junkyards in the SF area--perhaps Len168 or Mudge can comment.

In the East Bay there are simply buttloads of yards in Hayward and Fremont. The local Pic-n-pull or Pick-your-part are usually cheap (they even have holiday specials, etc) and are decent, albeit well scavenged, yards to pull a V8 from. The yards in Fremont have a ton of Chevy vans and large Chevy cars to get 350's from. I have yet to find a 400 block but I'm still looking

Good luck in your search and rebuilding a V8---just make sure it is at least a 350 cubic inch V8. ONe great thing about the 350, the rebuild kits are the cheapest and the displacement is perfect for a Z :D

Let me be the first to say welcome to the best board on the net! Although I can't help you find a yard in the bay area, there are a lot of members down there who will no doubt give suggestions. I bought my engine through, a classifed in a little want ad paper. I got a 350 with a 350turbo hydro for $150. You might want to check them out. If you shop around, you can find engines that are out, and sitting on the floor. Good Luck

Ah, forgot about that last comment. Bring a set of wrenches (9/16 & 1/2 are the most common on a Chevy), a utility knife or cordless sawzall (to cut through hoses), some screwdivers, and a pickup truck to haul the engine away in. You can use seatbelts from a car to lift the engine instead of a chain, but the yard may not like that. Some yards, like the Pic-n-pul variety, have hoists that you can rent from them; they usually have big tires so they roll easily thru the yard.

the sunset district is the place! dont go to the local yards, they suck, and they want too much for what little they have, best bet is to go to the yards in fremont, richmond, and hayward, they got the good stuff. also, check out the weekly free paper, every other week somebody is trying to give away an SBC. theres a lot of import street wars out here.........

Thanks everyone! I think I'll take up the offer of coffee when (if) I ever get back to SF Davy . In Fort Lauderdale on a never ending business trip. This is the 5th time I have had to cancel my return flight and stay. Arrgh.
