Guest jwcanfield
I'm looking for a modified 240Z ( for a zippy daily driver*) and have been considering a couple approaches. So far I've looked at one with a V8, one with a NA 280zx engine and tranny and even one with a Mazda rotary engine. I've also been reading posts here but ... I'm not a techie. In fact, I can write everything I know about cars on an aspirin with a crowbar. I need some advice ... Please. Which of these options is the most reliable and the easiest to have serviced? What are the problems inherent in these options? Thanks!! * I'd love to go 0-60 in 5-7 seconds and still get 20+ mpg -- 1983 280ZX n/a : 0-60 Yes : Top Speed 85 MPH
Tim240z
Well, as for reliability, it really all depends on the quality of the initial build. In my opinion, the V8 would be a good choice for power vs. reliability, purely because the engine won't have to work nearly as hard to get say 300hp, as say a L28 with 300hp. SBC/SBF parts are generally very cheap, and very available too. A low tech (carb) small block chev V8 with an auto tranny will give excellent power, and great driveability, and as long as the tranny is an overdrive unit, your fuel consumption goals will be met fairly easily. Guest Anonymous
I agree with Tim 240 z the V8 would be the better choice for you, if your looking for the power and gas saver options. I have a 81 280zx n/a but im bored 20 over and setup to run with the big boys and Im getting about 22 mpg too. Just be carefull about the V8 The parts aren't as cheap as what people say they are.
