Guest Anonymous
Ok, here's the delima. I know there is no set way to do this, but I'm just wondering. I had a loose rocker arm, so I was hot setting them, and well, I guess I made them all too tight. So, what I'm doing now is goint to where I can't move them from side to side, and then going one more quarter of a turn. All of this is of course with the valves all closed. I didn't bend any push rods. I know everyone says hot setting is the way to go, but I tend to make them too tight, as I did this time. Any advice or anything from anyone? I mean there should be some slight ticking as the springs go up and down, correct? Thanks for any and all info. Sean
denny411
Do you have solid or hydraulic lifters? It`s very hard to describe how to adjust valve lash for solid lifters. It`s something I can show easier than tell.hydraulic on the other hand is pretty simple.I set them initially by following the directions in the manual. but afterwards I always readjust witha stethescope. I run the engine put the tip of the scope at the base of the spring, back off until it ticks then tighten just until it stops. This way you know they aren`t too tight or too loose I started doing this years ago because I thought the way they tell you in the books wasn`t quite consistent enough. I`m not sure how well this would work with solid lifters, I suppose if you had the engine at full operating tempurature it may work just as well. Unless someone says differently I might try this when I get mine installed and see what kind of results I get, I cant see that it would hurt too much But I`ve been wrong before.(don`t tell my wife that though)
Guest Anonymous
ok, thanks for the info. I have hydrolic. I'll go ahead and set them like I did, and then in the morning I'll do the stephoscope trick. Sounds like a grand way to me:) sean ps, your secret is safe with me. Guest Anonymous
so are you setting the scope right on the actually head, right beside the spring? I still don't really hear a tic noise. Are rocker arms going to be able to move at all when the valves are closed? or should they be stationary?
