Guest Anonymous
I own a 72' 240Z and i've decide on doing a V8 swap, Ive ordered the "Jags That Run Manuel", i'm now trying to decide which engine to use, any advise on what is easiest to use? I'm thinking of a Chevy 350 with a TH350 tranny, is that a good choice? Any advise would be great!
Guest thepenguin99
I would go 700r4 unless you are planning on keeping the stock 3.36 rearend.
fl327
thats a great setup to get the car up and running, and be a street killer it will suck on the freeway with the 1:1 final drive, and if you run flowmasters you will want to kill yourself because of the drone. Guest Anonymous
Thanks, thats alot of help! How difficult is the actual conversion?
Guest Anonymous
The toughest parts of the whole conversion IMO are the motor mounts, lining the motor up properly, and electrical. you want to purchase the jags that run (http://jagsthatrun.com) book for sure, this is mostly for electrical conversion knowledge... They make an excellent conversion kit, which is good but costs a bit more then I wanted to spend at the time (forget exact cost but was over $500+) anyways, if you are at all mechanically proficient and know a thing or two about welding or metal fab you can make motor mounts for dirt cheap (I made mine myself out of heavy gage steel square tubing with a few holes drilled in it! ) the radiator out of a 70's malibu at a junk yard ($25) a standard datsun transmission crossmember is used, (strengthend by welding a plate onto the bottom of it and then re-drilled to fit the GM transmission mount) and then you need a driveline. The driveline can be purchased from MSA (motorsport auto zcarparts.com) or you can get one from a junkyard malibu/nova, but this will likely require it to be shortend or vice versa by a shop. I suggest getting the motor installed where you want it first (make sure you leave ample space for the distributor-firewall clearence, especially making sure a larger HEI distrib will fit) bolt the engine/trans in, and THEN measure your driveline spacing requirements!! This will save you headache later. I did all my whole conversion myself. It took me 1 day to outline the procedures and get what I needed to do in order, and when I made the mouts and all my components together, it took 8 hours total to drop the motor, and get it all bolted up. the biggest hurdles are electrical, motor mount, transmission mount and driveline. these things are WHY the JTR book is your new bible. I dont believe in it being necessary to buy the kit, but it makes it easier. My kit I made is patterned after the scarab setup. If you decided to fab some stuff on your own, its pretty easy... and there are alot of great minds on this board to help you no matter what path you choose.
