Guest Anonymous
Have a 93 lt-1 in my Z. Have a problem at the track (road courses). On the passenger side valve cover there is a vent hose that goes to the throttle body from the rear top part of the valve cover. Only at track events this hose will suck oil into the throttle body and quickly kill the 02 sensors. Oil pressure is good, no obstructions to block oil flow back to the pan, pcv valve is good, anyone have any ideas or have this problem? Thanks for your input. Guest Anonymous
Mark: My information from a professional engine builder says you need to have rocker arm covers that have inside oil baffles built into them on both sides of your engine, simply as a matter of good practice and so prevent such a situation as tou describe. Personally, I would suppose you have a oversize oil pump and a real good load of oil in those covers at higher RPM. The splash could get real nasty in the turns. Also we hope that pump isn't also sucking the pan almost dry? SPIIRIT
Guest Anonymous
Thanks for the info. I do have a high volume oil pump and a canton winged pan. Oil pressure stays good in the turns. Anyone have a suggestion on a good set of baffeled valve covers? Mark
Guest Your Car is Slow
Couldnt you just jbweld a little plate over the hole so that air could still escape through the sides into the vent hole...but oil would just splash off the front. (this is how ive seen older valve covers deal with that)
Guest Anonymous
Stock valve cover is baffeled so I don't think further baffels will help. I love jb weld but it wont help here . Thanks, Mark
Guest Your Car is Slow
Damn..its comin out THAT bad past the stockers w/ baffles?????? thats quite a bit of suction coming from the throttle body ventilating that valve cover. Ever thought about popping a K&N breather on the end and plugging the hole in the throttle body?
Guest Anonymous
Tried that, all I got was oil blowing out the breather on a hard left turn. Oil will slosh toward the baffel and then get blown out. I'm going to try a catch can that is vented to atmosphere and pluging the vacume line at the throttle body but I'm sure I'm not the only one that has ever ahd this problem. Would like to find someone that has already solved this. Thanks for your ideas. Keep them coming. Mark
grumpyvette
(1)take the passangers side valve cover off amd rotate it 180 degrees so the top edge is now the lower edge and reinstall it with the pvc valve hook -up connection in the further forward position (2)while you have the valve cover off check to make sure the oil drain back holes in the rear of the cylinder head are clear and free flowing (3) if both things don,t fix it you have a restricted oil drain back, YES YOU NEED TO FIX IT! TEMP BAND-AID FIX SWAP TO HIGHER TALL VALVE COVERS, and INSTALL THE PCV valve CONNECTION about 2-3" back from the front of the valve cover OR DO WHAT MOST GUYS DO, use this type and hook the pvc to the center tube after weldini in a conection and yes before you say anything , yes your likely to need to weld these connections up (CUSTOM WORK) on TALL CENTER BOLT VALVE COVERS for an LT1 engine, and yes Im well aware that the brakets over the drivers side valve cover will also need to be cut and rewelded for greater clearance that hold the accessories on the drivers side valve cover area, (YES IT HAS BEEN DONE)
Guest Anonymous
Thanks Grumpy. I'll do that. Is the stock vent hose on the passengers side supposed to have a valve in it? Mine doesn't. I'll check the oil drain holes also. Thanks for your help. Mark
Guest Anonymous
Heh, I like the part about JB weld. Retired Engineer sounds good. I was also thinking your oil was loading up in there but you said the drain back was ok so I dropped that. I just don't have the firsthand experience to properly analize this situation, perhaps you could consult a necromancer and have then summon up Smokey for this one.....LOL Also, I bet a "Circle Track" Website would make short work of this one! grumpyvette
SMOKEYS NOT AVAILABLE but he did take high speed film of what happends in clear plastic oil covers at high engine speeds an the oil level even at 7000rpm in an engine with a high volume oil pump only gets about 1/2"-3/4" deep (the valve covers don,t fill up provieded the drain back holes are clear)
Guest Anonymous
Took the passengers side valve cover off. Center bolt cover so I can't turn it around. It has a baffle in it and this baffel hangs way down. I think the baffel is about .5 inches from being at the bottom of the valve cover. I think this is getting covered by the oil at high rpms and then gets sucked up by the vacume. May tru to take this off and shorten the baffel. Would like to consult with Smokey. Will have to look up a good necromancer. Any recomendations?
Guest Anonymous
I'll probably see Smokey before the rest of you. I would be glad to take a message! Smokey reveals what Grumpy says in which of his books? Hollywood knows all about magic stuff. Try Shirley Mclaine.....Har!
