Guest Anonymous
Hi all, I've just started tearing down a beater zxt for my 240z. Right now I'm undecided on wether to go with the T5, or the 5spd I have in my 240z right now. I will more then likely swipe the 3.54 rear though, I have 3.9 in the 240 right now. That is not my issue. I have already transplanted L28carbed/5spd/3.9 into my 240z, but it's just not fast enough!Primarily were I suck and will need assistance is in the wiring department. I have been parusing zcar.com and have figured a few things out from reading some of the older posts at zcar.com (is it just me, or does it seem all the good posts are old posts there?) But I still haven't seen a real clarification of just exactly what I need off of the 82 donor car! I'd like to stick with the bosch EFI , as money is an issue, I am dividing funds between my 65 big block buick skylark, and the 240z at this juncture in time. Compression seems to be good, the turbo is not turning, so I'll probably send it to majestic to have it rebuilt, but there are so many WIRES. what can I eliminate? I dont care about cruise, or emissions, if that can eliminate anything. Just a good reliable solid 240zt! thanks in advance for any suggestions, or help! dat240zg
Andrew: I've been going through the same swap and the wiring is the probably the most intimidating part by far... I've tried to pull together as much info on the wiring as possible; I'll see if I can find the file and shoot it to you. The short of it is, get as much of the harness as possible. I was able to get mine out without disconnecting much and only cutting 5 wires. I was always told (and it ended up being good advice) to get the motor running in the 240 first, and then start seeing what can be removed without affecting performance or drivability. I know that I haven't given you too much detail, but if I can find my file I'll e-mail it to you. Shoot me your e-mail address. Later! scottyMIz
I did this swap in my 76 280 and all you really need to hook up is like three wires from the zxt harness.I took off the iac and the egr all i had left on mine was the afm, stock ignition, and injectors the rest can go.Since you don't need anything else hooked up like me look at only using three wires and i can help with a wiring diagram if you'd like.It is very easy to do but you will need an electric fuel pump but again not hard to do. DAW
The harness you need is basically intact as one unit. Start at the fuel pump and remove the harness (dark green wire) from there forward to the ECU, push the ECU connector through the firewall hole (along with the fuel pump wire) and leave this harness on the engine (connects to injectors, sensors, distrib, etc. I would strongly suggest that you not unwrap, cut, separate or alter this engine management harness. You will be way ahead of the game if you transfer the L28ET with this harness intact, into the 240Z then transfer the fuel pump and ECU from the zxt; hook it up and start it. Once you've fired it up then go back and alter the turbo or whatever you want to do to it. DAW
Guest Anonymous
I'm at work right now and in between calls, I'm looking at the wiring diagram for the zxt. I can pull out the harness, and judging from how the connections go on, it's not really hard to figure were they plug back up. I'm not at the car right now, <obviously> but were does the ecu get its power from? is it those relays next to the battery? Are there more than just the EFI management harnesses? If there is, then things are starting to make sense to me.
DAW
The thing is that the engine harness is absolutely essential and is the heart of the swap...just leave it intact and you're halfway there. There is an interface, if memory serves me, with another harness but it is minimal and I think that may be what the others are referring to re "only three wires" to hook up. Once I stripped a zxt and cut the whole car up with a torch, leaving only the engine/trans assy with the electrical harness I'm referring to, as well as the ignition/alternator harness, the fuel lines and tank, and a battery...and I could fire the engine up at will; and it was all ready to drop into a 240Z as-is.
