well crap

Wonder if one could fab up a bracket that would shift the alternator up some...to clear the frame rail....but still allow the belt to clear the waterpump.

Requires me to utilize another pulley to get around the waterpump.

Im selling the ps pump and ac compressor....and removing the tensioner. All I have need for is the alternator.

I am also only using the Alt., and looked at the problem for a long while and decided that the only way to do it was to leave the alt. in the OEM position. If you come up with onother solution, I would be very interested to see what it is.

Im a braket making ghetto riggin fool....I WILL come up with somethin to get rid of those other 2 pulleys :)

Too much room all up alongside that block (on either side for that matter without the AIR pump) to leave the alternator where it is.

Just out of curiosity...where does the clearance problem lie with the alternator (so I dont have to test fit it just to check this part out). Is it horizontally hitting (side to side) or would the alternator sit too low...or a combination of both?

There is no way to mount it low enough to have the belt clear the water pump, because of clearance with the frame/exhausts/body.

What I did was gut the PS pump and use it for a pulley, and make another adjustable pulley, down where the AC compressor was.

Here are some pics: http://tim240z.iwarp.com/photo2.html

  • 2 years later...

What about Darius's setup, or perhaps use an import cars alternator.

Darius's was very clean, he just had a fairly large aluminum bracket and a small tensioner... I would love to copy it, if he posted pictures of the bracket that were a little better.

I had a pic but can't seem to find it right now. I am at the same point right now where I refuse to put that big clunky bracket on my engine and might have to machine something myself if possible.

Another thought I had was mount another pulley to the front of my balancer and run a belt from there.

Your car is too slow, let me know if you work something out... I will post if I find another solution...

Dude,

This thread was originally started in 2003 and all posters have solved the problem. Tim gutted the PS pump as he stated, not sure what "Your Car is Slow" did.

I made my own bracket that replaces the PS and AC pulleys with 2 smaller ones and retains the stock tensioner. I can post pictures if you'd like, in fact I have in other threads so try doing a search.

Hmmm... if you mean everyone is using the stock brackets with some rigged pulleys and deletes that look like some cludge put together, then I don't think anyone ever "solved" the problem...

I don't want to use stock brackets, or even S&P's funny looking setup. I want something clean and compact... not just something that works.

I think Darius's setup had a fairly small aluminum bracket w/ a tensioner and the alternator mounted around where the air pump usually does... That to me was a fairly clean setup.

So... I ask has anyone got a setup that is professional looking? That is what I am asking for since I am so late in the game... the answer might be out there and I am just asking if someone has found one and willing to share their insights.
