Need help connecting power steering in my 280ZX...

Recommended Posts

I have the steering gear box type steering set up in my 80' ZX. I know that he fitting on my LT1 power steering pump is 3/8" but what size is the line from the gear box, the pressure line? Is there adapter that I can buy that will mate the female ends on both the line and the pump?

Thanks,

Guy

Guy, this is where it can get very technical, and there is more than one way to skin a cat on this, but here is what I would do, (because I have already :-D ). Otherwise, you might want to visit your local hydraulic hose shop and get chummy with the counter person.

Here is a link to a page of mine that explains what I did:

It might be very difficult finding an adapter to connect the metric (size ???) Datsun hose to the GM powersteering pump. I would suggest replacing everything up to the banjo fittings on the box. That way you are dealing with known sizes and fitings. You have a different pump than I and you will have to figure out what fitting is right to get a -6 AN male fitting screwed into the pressure side of the pump. Russle has fittings that may work for this. Look in the Jegs Catalog. Note that it could be inverted flare, O-ring or something else.

Make sure that all of your fittings and hose are rated for 1000 PSI. SAE 100R5 specification hose and fittings will be correct for this. The pressure side is critical for this. The return side is not pressure critical.

Yeah I kinda thought that it was a long shot (finding a metric to standard fitting) :(

I guess I will have to call Summit or Jegs tommorow to find out what I need to do the job. I suppose I should replace both the pressure and the return sides "while I'm at it"! LOL :bonk:

Ok I just thought of something that I could do...

What if I use the original chevy end of the pressure side to connect into the pump, then use a hard line to connect to the hard line of my datsun pressure side ,and put metal (flared) fittings where these two join up?

Does this sound like it will work? And if so what kind of fittings should I use to join these two? Do they need O-rings or anything?

You still run into the problem of adapting unknown metric size Datsun tubing to whatever size GM used (SAE, Metric?) for their hose assemblies. Then you have to find tube nuts and ferrules for the hardline that match exactly. Once you find those, then you have to flare metric tube. An SAE flare tool might not work because it won't grip the metric tube properly. That is why I brazed a known fitting size on the metric stuff, and went from there.

Power steering isn't something you can kluge up and hope it works, because you are working with several hundred PSI of hydraulic pressure and the first time you stall the pump at full steering lock, the system may fail and spew oil right on a hot exhaust manifold, get the picture? :flamedevil:

I still think your best options are: Convert the entire system to 37 degree style fittings using a Russell or Earl's pump adapter fitting and SAE 100R5 hose, or take your PS pump and Datsun banjo fittings to the local hydraulic shop / farm supply place and have the guy fab up a set of hoses.

Here is a picture of how my pump is plumbed. Note that your pump may need a different fitting.

Ok you have convinced me! I am going call around tommorow to see if someonce can make me one. I would rather someone else make one for me. My flaring jobs aren't the best

I was just try to think of the easiest(el cheapo )way to do this myself. I think I better just make sure I do it the right way the first time! I don't want to know what oil on a hot exhaust manifolds is like!

Thanks again Greimann!

Ok, I just told my stepdad about my "little problem" and he seems to think that someone has to make a fitting that will mate the 2 female ends of the hose and the pump. He is going to check at work(Air Wisconsin-He's a aircraft inspector) tommorow. If he can't find one he said that a machine shop should be able to make one pretty easy. This one end of the hose is the only thing that is causing a problem for me. :x
