Guest vodkaboy
well, i have inherited my dads '77 280Z 5 speed. Right now he is driving hisnew car (a pasat), and has told me that if i could fix the Z i can have/drive it. Right now the transmission is in poor condition, and i was planing on visiting a u-pull-it this weekend, when a thought struck me... if they dont have any 280Z compatible tranys, what if i ripped out an engine and trany. I know that the chevy small block is a fairly popular swap, and i know that it would probably be easier to find that than a dead Z of any sort... my question how hard is it to pull this off? (i have some semi greesemonkey friends one of which has integrated a mut-truck of 4 brands) how expensive is it if i already have pulled the trans and block... any other easier/less expensive/easier to find mods? to the gurus in advance
denny411
The sbc swap is certainly the most popular and the most documented. Jtr sells everything for the conversion including a detailed instruction manual. as for 280z tranny`s, There should be quite a few good ones sitting around, since the body usually goes before the driveline. If you`re looking to get it on the road asap,I would fix it for now and accumulate the parts for the swap over time. That way you will be able to take your time and look for bargains. Are you positive the trans is bad,or could it just be the clutch. That might be a dumb question, but I don`t know how much experience you have with this stuff.
Guest vodkaboy
its the trans, the synchros going into 2nd nad 3rd gear are trashed, and 3rd geardoesnt like to deive much either, its very worn... clutch isnt in too bad of shape actually... so where could i go about getingthe trany then, while i accumulate parts... any other cars (that aremore common than Z's) that might have a trany that would be compatible with the 77 280Z?
