tall deck diesel block?

Recommended Posts

i can get a tall deck 350 diesel block for 150 bucks. my question is this. how much can you bore one of these blocks. is it possible to bore it from the 4.00 bore to say around 4.150. i know the walls are a lot thicker then a normal block. i was doing some thinking and i just don't feel comfortable with putting 10+ psi to a .030 400 block. the walls would be to thin and would eventually begin to crack. i know i may have to buy a motown or bowtie block but don't like the price tag that comes with them. if anyone knows what is a possible over bore on a diesel block please let me know. thanks 2thumbs.gif

do you have a part number for that block your talking about? have you tryied to see if the heads, intake, cam, ETC. from a gas engine fit/ bolt on that block correctly yet? Im not sure they will if we are talking about the same block I think your talking about!

My girlfriend used to drive an old Oldsmobile with a diesel engine. It blew headgaskets frequently.

Here's a website with some info on them:

Here's a FAQ which might help you:

It mentions that the block is different than a GM 350, as this diesel block is stronger, but it mentions that you can convert it into a gas engine, so it looks promising.

The Olds diesel block can safely be bored .125". It shares the same main journal dia. as the big block olds. Mondello sells kits to stroke it to 454 cubes using a Olds 425 crank and big chevy rods, and some custom pistons. Use big block olds heads("C" castings are prefered) as they flow better than the small block heads. Also, the diesel block has enough meat in the main webs to add 4 bolt splayed main caps. That combo can be made to be bullet proof as all 425 Olds cranks are forged steel and aftermarket BBC rods are plentiful. Mondello has everything you need to build a fast Olds engine, but keep in mind it will cost double over a small block Chevy. I had a very nice '70 W-30 442 that had a built 455 Olds. MAJOR head work(original "F" castings, best stock head , only came on '70 W-30)), and LOTS(12.5:1) of compression plus Arias pistons and big Lunati cam made the car run 11 teens on MT Sportsman Pros through 3" flowmasters with NO NOS. That car has been through a number of owners in the last few years. I saw it a week ago at the drag strip with a BBC in it running 11.40's.

i don't know what the part #'s on it are but i can get them for you. my friend is the one with the motor. he read an article in one of the hot rod/ hot rodding mags were they made a 455 sb out of it. i was under the impression that it used the sbc heads intake ect.... but i didn't see the article and couldn't tell you for sure. if anyone did see the article about this please chime in. for those who don't know i'm building a twin turbo sbc and am going to need a block that will safly bore out to 4.150 and not have to worry about the cylinder walls cracking under boost. a stock 400 block will not be up to the challenege and i didn't want to spend the big bucks on a bow tie or motown block. if anyone knows of a block like that please let me know. 2thumbs.gif
