Guest dvlax28
Hey, i just joined this board... I am turning 16 soon and after working my tail off for a few months in the summer, i am going to buy a datsun. right now i am thinking of a '78 280z, because they are affordable and look awesome, and i have heard they are good cars. can anyone help me out whether its a different suggestion for a car to buy or what i should look for in the 280z....whatever you can help with. thanks, j@$()n AIM: dvlax28
denny411
My preference has always been for the 78 and earlier Z cars. IMO they have much better lines. If you have strict emission laws in your area, and you plan to do mechanical mods down the road. I would suggest buying an early 240z because it will be smog exempt sooner if not already exempt. Guest dvlax28
yeah i agree with buying one before 1978 because i heard that ZX's are not what i am looking for. can anyone explain the difference between the 280z and 240z? also i would like to know the pros and cons about 280z versus 240z. and lastly what do u mean by "better lines" ? j@$()n AIM: dvlax28
denny411
By better lines I mean the sleak look of the s30(pre 79) is more appealing than the s31(post78) models. JMO The 240 is quite a bit lighter than the 280, but the body isn`t as rigid.
Guest dvlax28
yeah i agree that around '78 was the best year for looks. and if 240z's are lighter, thats what i want...but how do engines and trans and all that compare? j@$()n AIM: dvlax28
Guest zline
well...I swear by 240's here's why 1. although not as rigid, they can be made that way as mostly all parts are interchangable 2. if you get a pre 1973 you dont have that bullshit 5mph bumper crap which looks terrible. 3. best lines 4. original 5. all L engines go into it w/o any trouble, RB's can be made to fit in it. but the RB can be made to fit in any Z chassis. Your best bet would be to look for a 70-72 240 and put a L28ET in it if youre looking for speed.
Guest dvlax28
okay, i understood MOST of what you said, but i still do not know everything about cars. first off, the 240 body isnt rigid.....well does that mean it wouldnt be as sturdy in a crash? if so, im not planning on crashing so i would rather have a weaker, lighter body. also, how could you use its "interchangeable parts" to make the body more rigid? and yes i agree with you on that bumper thing, i like earlier models, they look sweet. best lines? no idea and by L engines do you mean the inline 6 cylinder engines? i dont get the "L" part. lastly what is a "RB" ? im assuming the L28ET is an engine, if so, what does one of those run you? thanks a lot, anyone who knows it would be awesome if u could share the info. j @ $ ( ) n ps - what would be the best turbocharger to use in a 240z? i want a decent one, like medium sized. and how much would it run me to get decent turbocharger, with the associated turbo timer, wastegate, (possibly new, bigger exhaust?) and would i need a new intercooler?
